The Kelvin sets were good, i sort of prefered them as they were older looking than the Enterprises.
However, according to Star Trek magazine here in the UK, the purpose of the Kelvin sets was to emulate that the Kelvin represented TOS whereas the Enterprise sets were the future. so basically, it was to show that the Enterprise was brand spanking new. due to the contrast of the two, id say it was job well done.
As for the sets. Yes, i loved them, even though they were darker, i liked the grittiness look to it, took on a kind of Firelfly meets BSG look to it.
