The Karate Kid... movie... remake thing. Discussion and Spoilers

Coming out this week, features Jackie Chan and Will Smith's son.

I've seen some decent reviews for this thing and even some saying that Chan turns in a good performance. Myself, I likely won't see this until next week.

My girlfriend wants to see it. Shes mad at me because I dont. I have seen the orginal so many times.(at least once a year or so) I really dont want to see this one. Seems more like a "catch on tv", redbox rental type of thing.

Just got back from it and it was pretty good. I wasnt going to see it because of the nepotism, but I had nothing better to do tonight so I went. It was looonngg, but kept my interest. Very well done and worth going to see.

There was actually a Karate class outside my theater encouraging kids to sign up. (I went to see The A-Team) The theater employees were even wearing Gees. That's not my only hatred about this movie, though. It's the fact that Will Smith bought the rights for his son to star in the movie. If this is successful, expect other celebs doing the same thing for their kids. That company logo that comes on right after Columbia Pictures? That's Will Smith's company. Imagine a Back to the Future remake with one of Madonna's kids. It could happen.

I thought his kid did well in the Pursuit of Happyness, but I agree that with your point about people buying old movies to be remade with their kids as stars.

I cannot believe when I read that this movie was two-and-a-half hours long. Are you kidding me? The original film was an hour-and-a-half.

Does anyone know how to edit a film anymore in Hollywood? Judd Apatow makes comedies that are almost three hours long, Peter Jackson turned King Kong from a 90 minute movie to a bloated three hour plus "epic" and then this? Guys, you're not making Lord of the Rings...get a grip!

I voted terrible. Nope. I didn't see it. I never will see it. I know voting in a poll for something you haven't seen is a total dick thing to do, and I haven't done it since... well, since whenever they introduced polls on here. But, fuck this remake. Terrible.

I have no plans to see, so I'm not voting. However, while I was standing in line to buy tickets for the A-Team, a young African-American boy stepped on my foot and failed to apologize, but his mother told hiim to apologize, he did and I said no problem.

I asked what movie he was going to see and he said Karate Kid, then he asked if I was going to see it; I said no, but had seen the original a long time ago. He then commented this one would be a better film since the Karate Kid was black. His mother smacked him upside the back of his head for that statement; I however commented that he might be right, that this version might be better than the original.

Needless to say, it was an interesting conversation.

or having a 20 year-old star in a movie that is supposed to be about a kid.

so at least this Karate Kid got the other half of the title right.

maybe in 20 years we can finally get a Karate Kid that stars a kid doing karate.

retarded nitpicking aside. i thought the movie was fine. i thought it did a much better job of setting the kid up as a fish out of water. chan did a good job as Mr. Han.

i couldnt say if it was better than the original. i grew up watching the original, so nostalgia taints my perspective. but i think both have solid stories and it's good to see that a new generation can be introduced to it.
