The joys of "Trials and Tribble-ations"

It was a major anniversary special for Trek (30 years). As fanservice goes, for an official celebration, it's not bad - and is an impressive technical feat. If this were any regular episode, it'd be easier to pass if it didn't have its own story instead of piggybacking onto another. Especially as the Bajoran Orb o' Time also transports everyone way across space for no reason, stated or implied or hinted at. Why not have Barbara Eden show up, blink with that sound effect (like the 80s one from "I Dream of Jeannie 15 Years Later"), and *ding* they're 200 light years off course?

The story itself? Sure, there are references and in-jokes to X-Files and Trials comes close to rewriting the original The Trouble with Tribbles, but it's a loving homage and tribute...

...Unlike VOY's "Threshold", which feels like a retcon trampling all over ST6 then having Janeway sneer over the attitudes of Kirk's crew and era. (I'll save the pros and cons for the VOY forum, there are a few bits to like...)

Trials knows what it is - a fun, celebratory romp - that takes enough care to celebrate without trampling over what it is celebrating.

Of course it was a fan service episode. It was DESIGNED and PRODUCED for that very reason, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of STAR TREK.

I'm sure whatever series is on in 2026 will do a 60th anniversary episode for the same reason.

Yeah, which by comparison will make VOY's "Flashback" seem positively tame, unretconned, and uncontroversial by comparison.

The DS9 episode was SUBSTANTIALLY better than the Voy 30th anniversary show. I like Sulu and all, but the story kinda stunk.
Trials is great for its technical achievements, and execution. It really has no story.

Sneer? She's more like nostalgia tripping over it, like Sisko and Dax do in Trials

Genuine question, as I haven't seen "Threshold" for a long time, but is there a conversation like that in the episode? Or did you mean "Flashback" (the episode with Sulu in it)?

Haven't really kept up with DS9 for a long time, but watched "Trials and Tribble-ations" tonight for the first time in yonks.
That was some impressive pieces of editing to bolster up a pretty weak semi comedic story
Dax and Sisko looked the part as Kirk era crewmen, O'Brien and Bashir a bit like fish out of water, but I enjoyed the episode immensely.
Yup great episode. They wove the new scenes in with the old perfectly

The crew of Discovery travel back to the 23rd century to stop Dulmer and Lucsley from murdering Odo, who brought tribbles into the 24th century.
That sounds like a fun idea. There was a similar thing that they did in Marvel Comics over the years. The Fantastic Four had a time travel adventure in ancient Egypt in an early 1960s comic. Years later in the 1980s, Roger Stern had Dr. Strange go back to ancient Egypt and had Dr. Strange interact with the FF without them ever being aware of it. And a few years after THAT, Steve Englehart had the West Coast Avengers travel back to the same spot in history and just miss the others throughout their entire adventure.

When they did TOS-R I thought it would have been great if they had used the footage of O’Brien and Bashir as part of the group Kirk dresses down after the big fight.
I've long thought that it would be fun if they released an alternate version of "The Trouble With Tribbles" that was the same episode, only you occasionally see the DS9 cast sneaking around in the background. There probably isn't enough footage of the DS9 actors to do it, though.

Yeah, it really did.

I'm forgiving of that, as they just get to the point quickly. The DS9 had the sense to know that everyone was tuning in to see the DS9 crew interact with the original cast, so they didn't waste any time about it. We see Kirk's Enterprise at the end of the teaser. Compare that with VOY's "Flashback", which IIRC, wasted an entire act on Tuvok's BS memory problem before we even got to Sulu and the Excelsior, which was the entire point of the episode.

For this episode, I don't particular care how the DS9 crew goes back in time or gets back to the 24th Century at the very end. It's enough that they do.

Yeah, the "of course the whole lot of them would be drummed out of the fleet today" bit still pisses me off on the rare occasions I watch that episode.

I love this episode! Almost perfect. I say almost, because my one complaint is when the fight breaks out in the bar on K-7, they use the Berman sonic wallpaper music instead of the awesome music from The Trouble With Tribbles.

Agreed. If you watch the two versions back to back, it's startling how bland the DS9 music is by comparison.

"Those are Klingons?"

ALL HEADS TURN IN UNISON TO WORF, WHO IS SQUIRMING UNCOMFORTABLY IN HIS SEAT.

"They are Klingons."

:lol::lol::lol:

That and Dax & Bashir...

SISKO: "Operations officers wore red, command officers wore gold."
DAX: "And women wore less."
BASHIR (oogling Dax): "I think I'm going to like history."
