The Invasion

^ There is also a more direct reference. In RotC, Mr. Crane drives an International Electromatics lorry - the same company ran by Tobias Vaughan in The Invasion.

Wow I never twigged that (Probably because I hadn't seen the invasion when I saw the Cyberman 2-parter.) I have to say that I've never been a huge fan of the NuWho Cybermen 2 parter, and I have to say that The Invasion has made me even less of a fan. It's actually a very mature story- was this really a kids show in the 60s?

Yep. This story was also the trial balloon for Who's direction in Season 7, and if you've never seen any of those...well, let's just say that these are some of most mature (downright adult) Who's ever made. Season 8 and beyond in Pertwee toned it down a tad. In fact, with a few exceptions (like the stories in Season 13), I don't recall stories as mature as these at all in later Who until The Caves of Androzani. Let's face it that sequence where Stotz and Krelper go at it on the surface and the bit where Morgus murders the President isn't exactly children's fare.

Ideally I would like all missing serials to be released on DVD with animation for the missing episodes.

As for The Invasion, it is one of my favourite episodes of Who of all time.

Hmmm... I know that this is the official line, but I have a big problem with that terminology. With very, VERY few exceptions, Doctor Who has never really been executed as a "kid's" show.

And it makes me really wish it had sold better because the animation studio said they'd love to do more. The Beeb won't cover it though because The Invasion didn't sell enough. Shame too.

Damn. In some ways, I like the animated episodes better than the live action ones. They have a certain cinematic feel that the studio bound live action ones lack.

I love The Invasion and it's my second favorite Second Doctor serial after The War Games.

Speaking of, when are they going to put "The War Games" onto DVD? As the longest intact story available & Patrick Troughton's final story, I'd think that would have been one of the first b&w serials they'd put onto DVD.

It's coming out next year for its own 40th anniversary. I simply cannot wait for that release. I'm hoping, amongst many features and interviews, a commentary track from Frazer Hines, Wendy Padbury, Philip Madoc, and Terrance Dicks (my favorite serial of his, although he co-wrote it with Malcom Hulke).

It's a wonderful DVD set, and the animated episodes did a really good job of filling in for the live action. I also love how they slipped a Bad Wolf in there.

Also, talking of continuity porn, it's a great taster of what was to come with the Pertwee years and the UNIT Lorry Base Thingy in The Poison Sky/Sontaran Stratagem harks back to The Invasion aswell.
