The Internet (in Canada) has reverted to the BBS age

Thanks for all the great information guys. This conversation is very informative for someone outside of Canada.

The way I see this, is Netflix finally came to Canada, and Bell said, "You know what? Let's screw them!"

Like Marc said, this isn't because the telcos want to screw Netflix... it's because they're afraid of them. The internet is a threat to the stranglehold these few companies have on Canadian media and they will do everything they can to get people to stop using them and go back to the (poor quality) services that they offer themselves.

Sorry, I guess my analogy got off-track. I didn't mean to say it was Netflix they meant to screw, but rather the consumers, and I realized that after looking what I wrote.. Either way, it's not very nice to Netflix, not to mention consumers. And what frustrates me in all this is that, by being scared of Netflix, instead of looking for solutions giving consumers more options such as starting a competitor to Netflix , like a site like Hulu for Canada, they want to go ahead and do something that actually regresses technological advancement. I hate having to hunt sites that are often inadequate and sparsely updated to find what I'm looking for in order to watch what I want. The U.S has Hulu, and I think it's about time something like it happens to Canada. I know Hulu's about to start going the pay route, but one way they could make this work in Canada that I think would satisfy both the companies and the consumers is to give access to it as part of a cable/dsl/satellite package by the companies who support it, or by making it available as part of a tier package, much the same way Pay TV was back in the day, this would more less be a digital version of it.

I think we're all looking at this the same way though, so it's all good. We just have different words to express the same end.

Just saw this on YouTube:

We do get royally screwed here in Canada for internet, cellular phones, etc.

When my friends in Sweden, for example, tell me what they pay for those services and what their plans offer, it makes me want to either weep or move there or both.

Yay! They've postponed/canceled the March 1st introduction of caps. I guess 460,000 signatures on a petition can't be ignored by those in Ottawa, even by the arrogant Conservatives.

I've been working/living in Indiana on assignment since mid June and when I compare the Comcast prices and internet speeds to what we have in Canada it makes my blood boil. Its bull$hit.

Though I do wonder about the intelligence of some people who writh the media. A letter writer to the my local paper (which is owned by Sun Media) saying that the government should appoint people the CRTC and that's a bunch of communists censoring and controlling what people can listen to etc.
