The Infinite Vulcan

I didn't think it was dumb. Apollo was just using one of his old tricks that no doubt impressed ancient humans far more than Kirk and company, which was the point, I think.

I like the idea of giants. This way, I can call the shuttlecraft seen in the planet of the Titans Enterprise painting and the figure walking toward it--an excuse to make the main ship even bigger.

"Infinite Vulcan" gets criticised a lot for the giant clone yet the same thing happened in a TOS episode where the same thing gets little or no comment. And now we have an explanation as to the why. Although no explanation for the giant clothes.

Just as we know that Apolo's "hand" in space was really a form of energy as well as creating the illusion of a hand it's entirely possible that Apollo created an illusion of himself growing to thirty feet tall. And for the brief time we see him that tall the illusion could have been convincing enough to pass particularly when the landing party is in a state of surprise. It's easy to rationalize.

Fifty foot Keniclius and Spock clones is something else entirely because you're talking about something manifest physically and all the inherent problems with that. The internal structure of a Phylosian might allow for a fifty foot tall being just as it allows for large scale plants (trees being but one example) here on Earth.

Now we know that there are indeed large scale animals on Earth yet they tend to be in the ocean where their bulk is supported by being suspended in water. On dry land there have been large dinosaurs, but their form and skeletal structure were much different than a human's. And as I understand it such very large creatures were not particularly agile or fast. It isn't just a matter of supporting it's own bulk but also that nerve impulses move only so fast and so such large animals move much more slowly as a result.

Compared to small creatures such as mice, birds and insects normal sized human beings are slow and cumbersome animals.

The skeletal structure and muscle mass to handle the incredible increase in body mass is simply too prohibitive.
Might sound funny, but I wonder if the majority of the time Keniclius Five and Spock 2.0 would have had to move around on all fours?

:)

It's not an illusion of a hand that Apollo created to grab the ship, it's energy in the form of a hand. There's a difference. Apollo can beam himself with his organ (hee-hee that sounds funny), and one or more passengers along with him. He could shoot lightning. None of those were illusions; they involved real manipulations of energy. Growing himself to be thirty feet tall or whatever would be by the manipulation of matter/energy, not completely unlike what he does when he beams himself. He could compensate for any of the stresses that'd occur from being thirty feet tall through more manipulations of energy.

And all Apollo did while thirty feet tall was stand there, he wasn't walking around or anything like that.

:)

Right. And he soon vanishes, as if he's weary. If it were a mere illusion, he should have been able to hold it all day. My guess is that he could have been a giant for longer, if he hadn't been holding the ship too.

I like the more fantastic and outrageous elements of Trek, and so I really enjoyed this episode!

I'd love to know what Giant Spock Clone got up to in the decades afterwards.

You're not the only one. #LowerDecks got me to rewatch this episode to remember what the *bleep* was up with #GiantSpock.
Written by Walter(Checkov), I think that's brilliant.
