It's kind of impressive how so many Star Wars fans are upset at the New Republic's failures and call it bad storytelling while ignoring how much effort the writers are trying to make a meaningful statement about the fragility of democracy. Between this and the Prequels, the fact democracy is easily subverted once people become complacent isn't a failure of imagination: it's a central theme.

To say nothing of flatly ignoring that it was the same damn thing in the old EU books too. You'd think people would remember a name like Borsk Fey'lya, to say nothing of those idiots electing an ex-Imperial Admiral as President 30 years down the line.

Freedom is only one generation from extinction.

I read that somewhere.

Why did so many folks support the Empire.

Democracy really is more fragile than a lot of people want to admit, just look what's happening in the US right now.

is this your own channel?
I don't get why youtubers need to take 20 minutes to explain something that takes 5 seconds on paper.

Of course, the Republic didn't really "fall" the way people might have imagined back in the 80s or 90s. It just became the Empire. (Like in real life.)

The fall of the Roman Empire was riddled with strife. Society was decadent, love of family diminished, loyalty could be bought and sold.

The transformation of the Galactic Republic into the Galactic Empire within Star Wars is almost certainly inspired by the historical Roman Republic changing into the Roman Empire. The decadence and corruption found within the Roman and Galactic Senate was a major factor in those political system changes.

Because if they took 5 seconds, there would be no room for ads and thus no cash.

Because we have to be paid to be nerds these days.
