It does say books and movies in the description for this sub-forum, so I hope this is the correct place to put this.
I saw the first movie before I ever read the books. One of the first things I thought of after watching was the episode of Star Trek, "Bread and Circuses". A modern society with televised death matches. In the Star Trek episode it's a mid 20th century equivalent of The Roman Empire on an alternate Earth. In the Hunger Games it's a post-apocalyptic future Earth.
Another observation, the people of the Capitol and the games/arenas themselves seem to have a level of technology similar to planet based tech seen in Star Trek or Star Wars. Hovercraft, forcefields, holograms and genetic engineering. But the working class people in the districts have a much lower level of technology.
