^ I could easily see the fireside song lasting twice as long as it does...

Re: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - Grading & Discussion (Spoilers

An extended cut? Really? My biggest complaint about the movie was that it was a theatrical release that already felt like an extended cut. I guess I shouldn't be surprised...
This is my opinion as well. I felt there were a lot of scenes in the theatrical cut that seemed like they should have been left for the extended cut, such as the pointless rock giants scene. I even debated whether to even get the upcoming blu-ray at all. I did pre-order it, but I definitely won't be double-dipping for the EE. If this is what we can expect from the next two, it's no wonder PJ was able to pad this story out to 3 movies.

I can't believe I actually voted B+ for this movie. Of course, that was a result of the just-watched-it high, but retrospect certainly hasn't been kind to the movie, IMO.

Sound like an excuse for more scrotum beards...

Here's an interesting video essay for those who disbelieve Gandalf and say the movie was too long... (Though I do still think the chase to Rivendell could have been heavily cut/trimmed.)

Re: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - Grading & Discussion (Spoilers

The humor was not funny.

Some of it was, like the "I'm not infected" bit and Balin calling Sting a letter opener.

Someone with some serious balls should have told Peter Jackson NO to stuff like that.

Yeah, people always said that about George Lucas. What they don't seem to understand is that saying NO to the boss doesn't tend to do wonders for one's job security.

Nobody wants to drop major cash to see a bird-shit in 48FPS and 3D.

And yet they did. I'm talking about people who saw it in 2D first and then went back to see it again in HFR 3D. I suppose they don't really know what they want.

Why should people double-dip at all? Just get the version you prefer.

That's what I did with the LOTR movies. Once I found out about they were doing extended edition, I just rented the theatrical versions, and then bought the EEs.

Yep, that's what I plan to do.

Re: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - Grading & Discussion (Spoilers

I'm not even sure if I would want to but extended versions of these movies. The theatrical version of AUJ already felt llike an extended version with all of the stuff they added that wasn't in the book.I guess I'll wait for reviews of the EEs before deciding.

Re: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - Grading & Discussion (Spoilers

So I waited for the blu ray release before trying this movie out. Good thing too, took 3 sittings on 3 different days to get through it. It really felt bloated. Radaghast the Shitstain didn't need to be in the movie at all. And the Goblin King gave me serious Boss Nas flashbacks. I half-expected him to send them through the Planet Core.

What worked in the movie? Pretty much anytime they focused on Martin Freeman as Bilbo. Unfortunately, for a film titled "The Hobbit" there was precious little of that. Too much LOTR tie-in crap, and too many rambling cartoon action sequences that just plain weren't engaging.

It's not that it was an entirely bad movie, but, it's the kind of movie where it lived up to my fears rather than my hopes.

Re: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - Grading & Discussion (Spoilers

So, the Extended Edition came out in the US on November 5th. Has anyone else had a chance to check it out yet?

Overall I thought it was an improvement. It only added twelve minutes of footage, but I think most of the additions were positive, especially (almost all of) the Rivendell scenes. They provided some added depth and character motivation that the theatrical edition kind of glossed over.

The special features are, no surprise, extensive. I'm still making my way through the material on the first disc, which is four and a half hours long. I believe the features on the second disc add up to a similar length. Well worth the wait!

Re: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - Grading & Discussion (Spoilers

The extended came out?! I didn't see it at Target!!!

Re: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - Grading & Discussion (Spoilers

Target isn't selling the extended edition. I was told by the guy in the media department at Target that they only sell major releases of movies and that the Hobbit EE is considered a re-release by them so they're not selling it. Then I had to go to 2 Best Buys to find it.

Re: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - Grading & Discussion (Spoilers

Huh. I wondered why their circular had said nothing about it. Neither did Walmart's, for that matter.

Even though I got this on Tuesday I'm only up to the trolls.

Re: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - Grading & Discussion (Spoilers

My Target wasn't selling EE, and I went to Best Buy, and they only ordered THREE copies and they're not ordering anymore. WTF! This is a billion dollar movie, people!!!

Re: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - Grading & Discussion (Spoilers

Really. I know you'd think everyone would have dozens of copies. I think I saw the Blu-Ray of the LOTR EEs all over the place.

Well, if it's anything like my local Best Buy, they don't keep much of anything in stock anymore. The last few times I've gone their to buy something, they have been out of stock, so I just don't even bother anymore.

I believe that Target will begin selling them as of Dec. 1st.

Has anyone bought the extended edition DVD? i was wondering if its menu structure is similar to the Blu-Ray's with the "3d fly-through"?
