THE HAPPY BOTTON RIDING CLUB

The anniversary is 2017 and I only say I think it'd be then because it seems like something monumental that might take place then, but I could be way off!

And God NO!

The IDW comics are considered as canon as the Pocket Books.

Which is to say... not at all.

There's a certain amount of of contradiction between stories from each, but as one of the authors here stated (Christopher?), no author sets out to try to contradict other material, it just happens sometimes.

Countdown was drafted by the writers of the new movie to set the stage for things, and it seems to (in many ways) tie in more to the Star Trek Online game than the novel version of the universe. Would it be interesting if the novels moved toward the Countdown story and wrote that into things when they hit 2387? Certainly. Is it vital and necessary? Nope. It's just something that could potentially tie the novelverse together with the new movie though.

STO is set in 2409, 27 years after the Typhon Pact.

The book continuity and the Star Trek: Online continuity are incompatible. There never was a Typhon Pact in STO's history.

No, I didn't say that. Sometimes we do choose to contradict what other works have done, if that's what serves the story. If we're working within the primary novel continuity, then naturally we try our best to stay consistent with prior works in that continuity (though it's grown large enough by this point that it's hard to keep track of all the details), but sometimes we choose to write things that aren't in that continuity (like Crucible), or we choose to contradict books or comics that aren't in that continuity. For instance, Ex Machina contradicted The Lost Years' version of the end of Kirk's 5-year mission, and the fate of Janeway in the main novel continuity contradicts one or two of the Shatnerverse novels which were published earlier.

Of course, all tie-ins have to be consistent with the screen canon, as much as humanly possible. But continuity between different tie-ins is optional.

May have been another author then -- but someone recently said that nobody goes out of their way to contradict other stuff just because. Or maybe it was the poor choice of 6am wording I used above. :)

IIRC, The Needs of the Many drops a hint that the Typhon Pact exists in the STO timeline, but as a minor trading partership. I can't remember if the name is actually used or if it's just a mention of several of the Pact members being trading parters.
I thought it a neat tie-in to TNoTM's parallel reality thing - the implication being that without the Borg invasion (particualrly the Azure Nebula incident and preceeding political happenings), their relationship took a different path.

Well, I'm not sure whether The Needs of the Many is considered part of the STO "canon" by the actual makers of that game. It's a tie-in novel written by someone other than the game's creators, so it's probably no more definitive than any other tie-in. Mike Martin found it desirable to insert links between the continuities, but who knows if the actual game creators feel the same?

chritopher today for my nook I picked up 5 new star trek novels

losing the peace
zero sum game
seize the fire
rough beast of empire
paths of disharmony

is this the correct reading order for the typhon pact . also picked up star trek infestation ( federation zombies ) .

Having conversed with the people working on the game though not on this specific topic, I get the distinct impression they'd be open to anything that links their stuff into the whole. In fact, the cooler and more interesting the connection, the better. It's a fairly laid back group.

So when do you think data will gain control of B4 and picard leaves the double e ?

Hopefully the first will never come to pass, and Picard will either leave soon or a long time from now. Reading between the lines in the last TNG book, it's an idea which may soon come to the fore. It's either being built up to in Trek Lit or else it's not going to happen until at least TNG's 30th anniversary imho.

The former, I've always thought, could be done a lot smarter than what happened in the Pocketverse or what happened in countdown. Why limit ourselves to a stunted being (what a sad, depressing state that is), or a rehash of Spock in ST3? 1+2 does not still equal 2. It's 3, specifically a 3rd personality with the bits and pieces of both of the constituent parts.

The latter, well, that would be the end of the books for me. Picard is one of the few characters I actually care about, if he goes, so do my dollars.

I've generally been happy with the Next Gen relaunch, other than Peter David's book. The others were at least decent, if not good.

So far my faves have been Q & A, Greater than the Sum and the Destiny Trilogy. :)

well finished Q&A here's my rating : :bolian::bolian::bolian::bolian::bolian:

excellent book though I allways love it when Q shows up .
this should've been the finale TNG MOVIE not nemisis .

Now reading GREATER THAN THE SUM by CHRISTOPHER L. BENNETTE .:drool::drool:

Thank you very much! I had way too much fun with Q & A, and it's always a pleasure to see it still being enjoyed four years later.... :)

Q&A was awesome, hands down the best of the relaunch. I also liked the first two destiny books. I can't even recall the others.

sorry for the mispell mr.bennett only 50 pgs in and loving it . the half vulcan science officer is there a way we can get a artistict rendition of what she is sopposed to look like . I love her interview with picard for the bridge station . I could'nt stop laughing .

I have an actress in mind for the character now, so if I get some free time tomorrow I can make up a photoshop. Is she in a red or blue shirt? I can't remember.

Are you talking about T'Ryssa Chen? She's in sciences, so it should be teal blue. And who do you have in mind? The leading candidate in the casting thread seems to be Charlene Choi.

I was going to use Hyun Jyu Ni, based off of this exchange from the casting thread:
Chen: Grace Park
I've always used her for Prynn myself, and I find it hard to cast the same person in 2 big roles like this. I've been watching the Korean spy drama IRIS, and I've been thinking that Hyun Jyu Ni, might make a good Chen.

Going only from photos, she looks like the right type, allowing for being Korean rather than Chinese. But then, "Chen" can be a Korean surname as well. I guess I never explicitly specified that Trys's human ancestry was Chinese, though that was my intent. I just said she had Asian features.
I was looking for a clip with her in it earlier, but no luck.

Is the current relaunch series leading into the star trek online time line ? are we going to get to see the big wars that are coming up ?
