That they chose not to explain what happened during the previous three years is not a serious flaw of the film, but your personal disappointment. And you’re entitled to that..
It’s your opinion which isn’t the same as a fact. The film doesn’t work for you and thats fine. It still works for a lot of other people and thats fine, too.Why do you continue to tell me that it is a personal disappointment, when I have explained that to me the script and characterization is the major issue. That's very presumptuous and condescending to someone you don't know. I don't see the point of continuing the conversation since you prefer to keep your self perceptions rather than engage in a rational discussion.
The Gorns secretly spy on the invaders and learn they are part of a vast economical and militarist federation. They also learn that the only real military threat in this region of space is one patrolling starship. Arena takes place. YMMV
.But as it so happens, the Technical Manual - and, by extension, the Star Fleet Universe - place the Tholians at the crossroads between Federation, Klingon, and Romulan space.
As for the Gorn? I could never stand the cheesy version on TOS, could never get past the costuming.
