The future is now - 2010 in fiction.

What fiction can you think of that is set in the far away time period of 2010?

I can think of em.. 2010, and an episode of Stargate called "2010" neither were particularly accurate....

Well, 2010: The Year We Make Contact was based on the novel 2010: Odyssey Two.

Also that episode of the Simpsons where Lisa marries that British guy.

However, we're no closer to making contact with extraterrestial life (though we've got the cold war thoroughly licked, contra that film) and despite the prediction it seems Lisa will still be eight for this year; also it seems we have not yet annihilated all trees, made Big Ben go digital, or have the British save the Yanks in World War III (or is that what's going on in Iraq right now? Details, details...) I think Pakistan has a schedule for nuclear holocaust, also.

Optimistic futures, these.

I can think of em.. 2010,

I remember watching that at the cinema. How futuristic 2010 seemed. It seemed like it was a lifetime away.

One of my favourite episodes of SG1.

Other than the ones you've mentioned, I can't think of any others. Sorry. :(

I, for one, will look forward to Lucifer burning in our sky sometime during the course of next year.

Although, to be honest, the majority of the film/novel probably doesn't take place in 2010 as it was indicated it was 2010 at the beginning, but it takes something like a year and a half for them to get to Jupiter, so...

There was the 1994 TV movie Knight Rider 2010, part of the Universal Action Pack block, which was set in a Mad Max-style post-apocalyptic future. However, it seemed that the apocalypse in the story had happened more than 16 years in the past, so I never quite bought that it actually took place in 2010 (and the year was never specified outside the title).

I vaguely remember seeing that - didn't the car lack AI or any KITT type features ?

There was of course Knight Rider 2000 set in the 'future' of 2000ad....

The car's AI was the downloaded consciousness of the hero's murdered girlfriend, played by the gorgeous Hudson Leick (billed here as Heidi Leick for some reason). She could project a hologram of herself for the hero to interact with, so he wasn't just talking to the car. But yeah, it's questionable whether that qualifies as the car actually having its own AI, as opposed to the downloaded consciousness simply being "played" on its system.

As for other supercar features, it wasn't on KITT's level, but it had Mad Max-type armor and weapons and other special features.

According to I Am Legend, doesn't the Superman/Batman movie come out in 2010?
unless they have been filming that in total privacy, im not sure that its going to be end good if it comes out in 2010, it will feel rushed.

Now here's an obscure reference (happened to watch that particular episode several weeks ago):

The opening scene of the seaQuest (Season 1) episode "Photon Bullet" is set in 2010. According to the episode there was a major international crisis involving China that year that almost led to war. Nice prospect. :p

Oh, but hey -- unless something happens in the next few hours, we've now safely avoided "the Near-Apocalypse of '09" alluded to in Batman Beyond.

May 15th here we come!

Are there still that many physical billboards left in Times Square? When I've been there in recent years, it's seemed like every surface is covered in frenetically animated video screens. But maybe they have both and the video screens just dominate my perceptions more.

Not really sci-fi, but The Simpsons episode Lisa's Weeding takes place in 2010. I re-watched that episode last year, and sure is dated now. Moreso than any other episode from that season.

Of course, the novel I AM LEGEND took place around 1974 (!) so I guess the vampire plague has come and gone!
