The four-year wait for INTO DARKNESS

Honestly, I knew that Cumberbatch was going to be Khan as soon as he asked how many torpedoes there were and Kirk answered 72. I knew from doing my TOS timeline that that was the exact number of survivors on the Botany Bay in "Space Seed." I was simultaneously disappointed and angry that they weren't even creative enough to change the damn number. After that, it was just waiting for the inevitable "shocking" reveal.

A reveal that doesn’t work since Kirk has no idea who he is. Might as well say his name is Bob and get the same affect.

To be fair, that's little different from the effect the name had in "Space Seed". It could have been "Bob" there, too, for all the impact it had on Kirk at that moment:

KIRK: James Kirk, commanding the starship Enterprise.
KHAN: I see.
KIRK: And your name?
KHAN: I have a few questions first. What is your heading?
KIRK: Our heading is Starbase Twelve, a planet in the Gamma 400 star system. Our command base in this sector. Is that of any use to you?
KHAN: And my people?
KIRK: Seventy two of your life-support canisters are still functioning.
KHAN: You will revive them.
KIRK: As soon as we reach Starbase Twelve.
KHAN: I see.
KIRK: And now
KHAN: Khan is my name.
KIRK: Khan. Nothing else?
KHAN: Khan.
KIRK: What was the exact date of your lift off? We know it was sometime in the early 1990s, but
KHAN: I find myself growing fatigued, Doctor. May we continue this questioning at some other time?
KIRK: The facts I need, Mister Khan, will take very little time. For example, the nature of your expedition.

Let's face it, the khan reveal was for the fans, not for the good of the story.
If you mean the story would have worked well without it, I tend to agree. However, as presented in the story overall it was not distracting by any means for me.

But, I know it is a point of contention.

The 4 year wait was unfortunate, but wasn't as damaging as other things. But the 2009 movie certainly had a buzz that needed to be captured fast, and all the um-ing and ah-ing certainly killed the momentum a little.

Beyond suffered similarly.

Paramount does not have a great track record promoting Star Trek features to their full potential
