THE FORCE UNLEASHED - discussion

Finally managed to bring down the star destroyer after 3 days of trying. Turns out I'm retarded and was doing it wrong the whole time.

Now I keep getting killed by the obnoxious amounts of bad guys in the Death Star.

All right, beat the game.

I am generally underwhelmed by the whole thing. Some of the levels were fun, while some were just frustrating and annoying as hell. The story also leaves much to be desired.

This is not a game I will be playing again, but it would be fun if they had a 2-player mode where you could fight each other (like Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter).

I enjoyed the game although it seemed a bit short. I thought parts of it were a bit rushed particularly the parts following the part were you were "killed". I liked all the actors that they used for the characters except for the General. If he said "boy" one more time...

I liked it.

After beating the Emperor I when back and beat Darth Vader for the other Ending and the last Costume.

I then went back and played all of the training room challenges (man some of them where a bitch!) and lastly I loaded a few of the levels and picked up a few more of the cubes, I'm still missing a few.

I will eventually start a new game on the Sith Master level as I have all the force skills and most of the saber crystals.

Circuit City never did get Brothers In Arms in (very strange, I don't know whats going on with that) so I haven't gotten it yet.
I kinda want to get it there since I have a $10.00 gift card and my 10% off gamer card.
Saving $16.00 is a pretty good incentive to wait a few days but man, I wanna play it!

Just beat it on the Wii. Have to admit, I was a little disappointed I didn't get to take down a Star Destroyer in this version. :( Honestly, I liked the story a lot but the game was buggy and left a lot to be desired, but still, glad I played it.

Just got back from my GF's house hooking up a wireless router for her Wii.
After getting it set up we started looking at the Wii website and We found a trailers section.

Anyhoo they had several for SW.
I couldn't believe the lack of graphics and game play.
They had one of the developers diaries that showed the game play with the Wii Light Saber, OMG! How gimmicky and simplistic.

Not trying to insult you Campe98.

I once again have to quote the 11th commandment.

Though shalt not judge a game by the Wii version....;)

I pre-ordered this for the PS3 but canceled it. I might get it eventually but I heard there might be a PC version (despite the nonsense about the PC not being able to handle a game the Wii can) which I'd prefer.
It's not that the PC couldn't handle a port of the gimped PS2/Wii version, it's that most if not all PCs couldn't handle a port of the complete PS3/X360 version.

^why not?

Seems that any relatively decent PC with dual cores and a reasonable video card could handle it just fine.

i think, and don't quote me, that their argument was that their modification of all the games engines, including HAVOK and the way it's dynamically lit, and the way the soundtrack is triggered by your actions instead of being linear, yada yada yada.

Ya, i don't buy it either. God forbid someone mods it and makes it even better.

Here's what the wiki has to say

LucasArts opted not to develop a personal computer version of The Force Unleashed because doing the game well would be too processor-intensive for typical PCs;[23] scaling down the game's procedural physics for the PC platform would have "fundamentally" changed The Force Unleashed's gameplay.[29]

Pfft. I don't buy it.

They'd likely not be able to make the game scalable at all - so it wouldn't run at all on low to mid-end systems.

But my computer that's currently sitting next to my 360 is FAR more powerful than the 360 - so the notion that they couldn't make a PC version is hogwash. They just couldn't make a reasonably scalable PC version.

Same for me, my computer is miles beyond. But it's pretty obvious why they can't make it scale

The PS2/Wii version have to use difference engines and shit than the 360/PS3 versions. So it can't scale since they're pretty much different games for the hardware. At a code level anyway.

And if they can't make it scalable, they've just severely limited their audience. The market of gamers with no console and a new enough PC to run such a port can't really be that big, can it?

After 9 days and two completions, my copy of this game is now on ebay, playing it for the story isnt a challenge, and the jumps you have to go through to get the remaining sabre crystals is just too frustrating.

Hopefully I'll get a portion of the money back I wasted on this thing.

I completed the game a few days ago and have to say I really enjoyed it. It's far from perfect but I found the good outweighs the bad.

The good:

- Atmosphere: This thing just nails the feeling of being a Sith/Jedi in the SW universe for me. At its best, it really lets you become immersed in that reality.
- Visuals: Stunning. Not all levels are as great as Raxus Prime, for example, but many are absolutely stunning IMHO.
- Music and Sound: Wonderful use of the John Williams music (as well as some new material I believe) as well as the iconic sound effects. These things further help in making the whole thing come to life.
- The Force: Terrific fun to use. It's incredibly rewarding to beat a group of enemies by hurtling them away or smashing big blocks or explosive crates at them.
- Acting: I loved all the performances and the translation into computer images. Some of the walking looks a little stilted but that's about it. Casting was great as well IMHO (especially Witwer as the Apprentice).

The bad:

- Control of the Force: Sometimes, especially in hectical situations with many opponents, I found it was hard to select the object / opponent you wanted to get a hold of. At times this would result in choosing to just hack and slash away with the lightsabre which is nice but just not as rewarding IMHO.
- AI: Wow, does the AI suck in some parts! For many bosses, the easiest thing to do was make out a ledge or some high point to stand on and then just keep zapping them with lightning. Usually, they'll just stand there and let you go on. There were also a number of Stormtroopers who'd just stand around while you attacked them.
- Level design: While mostly beautiful to look at, some of the levels were just that bit too straightforward, I think.
- Combos: Is it just me or was anybody else just totally overwhelmed by the number of possible combos? I essentially ended up practically ignoring combos and just hacking away or using lightning or the Force.
- Training: Ok, I wanted to do all the training missions but some of the are just insanely difficult IMHO. Which makes them little to no fun to complete I think. Plus in one case I didn't actually know what to do because the description of what needed to be done was not given on the screen (there was some text on the screen but it was just something meant to be funny, I think).
- The Save system is confusing: The game is pretty fair in terms of where it saves automatically. But why the hell is there a "Save" command in the menu? As far as I could see it only saved what the auto save would have saved anyway. Since I don't have that much time to play I far prefer the possibility to just be able to save where I want to so that I can leave the game at any point if necessary.
- Getting back into an existing save game: Maybe it's just me but I couldn't find a proper way to simply access the different missions or the training room from the main screen. There's the New Game option, the Continue Game option and the Load Game option. If you pick the New Game option, you have to wait for the opening credits / animations to complete before you proceed. Continue Game seems to simply load one of the save games you created yourself. In my case this meant having to wait for an animation to complete before I could go into the menu and get to where I wanted to go.

I definitely think I'll be returning to the game at some point. I really loved 'being' in the SW universe, and this game just totally conveyed that feeling for me. I'll probably also choose the second ending this time. I doubt I'll be going after all the boxes since I usually find that kind of gameplay to be somewhat boring.

That's because they're weak minded :D

FYI gamers, next week (Oct. 12) Toys R Us is doing their buy two get one free sale on video games.

Any three game-only games. I doubt you could buy three Rock Band bundles and get one free.

Price shouldn't matter because if you get a cheap game and two expensive games, you're screwing yourself over because the cheap game will be free. So the best cost-effective approach would be to get three same-priced games.
