And yet the thread was for people that had seen the film, not people that had read the book.

Reading a book and thinking you know what the film is like, is like saying you know what the grand caynon is like because someone sent you a postcard of it.

Trent Roman listed a whole slew of things where you can come up with a reasonable conclusion about without experiencing them yourself, and if I were so inclined, I could add to them.

Yes, nothing beats experience. But when it comes to some experiences, the thing that would beat the experience is...not experiencing the experience.

The Clone Wars might fit that category. I've heard enough to know I'm not interested.

True on the postcard. But based on the postcard, and a little research, you would be able to glean enough information to make an informed decision on whether you want to go or not.

Yes, and the rugrats love The Clone Wars. That is not, IMO, a vote that says "good" to me. On the other hand, adults, especially ones whose opinions I respect, have given, IMO, a more clear eyed view, one devoid of the "if it's Star Wars, it MUST be good" boosterism, have indicated that it falls short.

I'm confident I'm not missing anything, in this case.

But when they feel the need to justify that like by telling the naysayers they "don't get it", that ALL Star Wars is kiddie stuff, and fans, scholars and film critics have been deluding themselves all along, is nonsense.

And those who do like The Clone Wars because they delight in seeing little kids enjoy it, or who are rationalizing that all Star Wars is kiddie stuff, either way, that does not give me much confindence those opinions.

I know they don't square with mine, as I don't see all of Star Wars as kiddie stuff, and I really don't care what little kids think, at all.

"Raped my childhood" is kind of a self-contradictory phrase since it's only used by people being childish. Go figure. Not to mention most people only remember mere snipets of their actual time as a child anyway so there's hardly anything to rape.

I could just as soon say 40 Year Old Virgin raped my adulthood.

You're right about Battleship Potemkin. That just has a good rep because nobody has actually seen it, except for in film class, and they all fell asleep and had to fake it on the exam.

I enthusiastically agree. When I said, upthead, that my instincts were rarely off? Scary Movie is the big exception to that (of course, I had no way of knowing that the trailer showed the only funny bits from the film). [Hans Moleman] The Wayans brothers owe me eight dollars and two hours. [/Hans Molemann] Seriously, I remember being at the theatre (don't recall for which film) when they showed a preview for Meet the Spartans with that brain-meltingly dumb Spears gag. A guy in the crowd shouted out: "Why hasn't anybody killed these people yet?" or something to that effect, which got more laughs from the audience than anything the trailer showed.
