The Flash - Season 1

To "ordinairy" people Chase Masterson is a nobody.

15 years ago she was on a few dozen episodes of DS9 as a very minor character.

G-List celebrity.

There was something in this week's episode that went understated, but it could be a stroke of genius if they use it the right way. While examining the organic residue that Peek-a-boo left behind, it was mentioned that the cells of the person she teleported took on properties of Peek-a-boo's own cells. Well, she teleported Barry.

One of Barry's more outlandish tricks in the comics was to vibrate his molecules so fast that he could become intangible and phase through solid matter. On the television series, Barry's encounter with Peek-a-boo may have just given him this added power, and he merely doesn't realize it yet. It would be an ingenious way to explain that iconic Flash ability.

It's also worth mentioning that in the Silver Age DCU, Barry's vibrational control of his molecules was a key element of his ability to time travel. Barry used his "cosmic treadmill" to get the time frame frequency tuned in, but Barry kept himself in the new time frame by maintaining the vibration almost like tensing a muscle. Once Barry relaxed, he would snap back to the present.

Those vibrational powers won't mean jack until he can move close to light speed and actually squeeze between molecules. Right now he can only vibrate hard enough/fast enough to shake a car door off it's brackets, which is easily fast enough to shake some poor buggers eyes out of their sockets if they piss off Barry.

Clay Parker doesn't seem to be anyone obvious from DC history according to google and wikipedia, however I took it to mean that he mimicry powers like that dipshit Petrelli brother from Heroes.

Oh.

All the Petrelli's were dipshits?

No biggy then.

Interesting thought. I was figuring it was a setup for having Clay return with the same teleporting power.

I hope we get a pretty good look at Grodd and not just see him mostly in shadows when they finally have a Grodd episode. Last week on The 100 they had a CGI gorilla and it looked pretty good (for a tv series at least).

I just figured that was their way of saying "If she touches you, you can transport with her" and that was pretty much that.

I love every single scene with father and son Allen. They work so well together.

Still off and on about the inconsistency of his powers, though. For gags, he can practically run around earth in the blink of an eye. When fighting Captain Cold, he can barely run faster than the the speed it takes Cold to move his arm around.

I actually can ignore that.
Same way I can ignore the problem of momentum when he runs a 90° corner without slamming into the wall or losing speed..

I thought the same thing. I thought it was odd when they mentioned it, but as the episode progressed, I figured it was their way of saying that they realized she was transporting someone.

I did find the whole explanation of how she needed to see to teleport was weak. The science felt strained, especially when the old "she needs to see or she can teleport into a wall" caveat to her power would have worked. The cells not reacting when they turned off the lights was very strange.

Anyone who has any familiarity with comics and comic characters knows teleporters like Nightcrawler need to know where they are teleporting into. I think Kurt even said something that the effect in X2.

Agreed. Which is why I don't like the theory some have that Henry is (a) Reverse Flash/Zoom. I'd rather see him serve as a counterpoint to Wells, with Joe in the middle. Joe relies on Wells, but he also doesn't fully trust him. Henry could serve as the opposite end of this spectrum.

While the application was fanciful, there's actually a scientific precedent for using quantum entanglement in relation to teleportation. The real-world quantum "teleportation" (which is really more of a transfer of information, but it's essentially equivalent to transporting a particle from one place to another) requires quantum entanglement with a reference sample to get around the Uncertainty Principle. Of course it doesn't work anything like the way they showed it, but it's kind of clever to use entanglement as an explanation for the old "line of sight teleportation" trope.

I'm kind confused though, because the preview they were showing before this one seemed to show some scenes with Barry and Linda Park that weren't actually in this episode.

Me too, and I noticed the same thing. I can't go back and check now, because I've deleted all episodes, but I guess it could have been deceptive editing of scenes we actually saw.
No, they weren't there at all. I saw the trailer a million times watching other CW shows so I remember it pretty well. There was a scene with Cisco calling Barry a lady killer or something like that, and another one of Barry and Linda being interupted while making out on a couch. We didn't see anything like those scenes in the episode.

Again, another fantastic Flash episode. This has to be the most consistently good show on the air. When the guy called him Flash at the beginning and the talk he had with his dad, simply great. Do you think Grood was CGI or man in suit at the end? I'm thinking man in suite.

Does "VFX" mean CGI or costume?

Generally the former. It's short for visual effects, i.e. image alteration, as opposed to mechanical or makeup effects.

The item says a stuntman played the role, but it looked like CG to me. It could well be performance capture.

I figured CGI as well, but saying a stuntman played the role gave me pause. Of course, them saying it was someone that worked on planet of the apes really makes it sound like you're probably right, the term was meant for performance capture.

Think they're allowed to use the same software? It's such a shame that it seems like the breakthroughs in movies aren't always shared across the board right away. Kind of like how for that DS9 episode where they integrated everyone into TOS, I remember reading that Paramount basically told them "We own the tech that made Forrest Gump, here you go, have fun!".

We need more of that. "We already have a gorilla modeled and rigged, you'll have to light and composite and just change it a bit to make it your own, otherwise we saved you some time, have fun!"

I've heard of digital FX models being reused by other productions before. For instance, the raptors in Doctor Who: "Dinosaurs on a Spaceship" were the same CG models created for Primeval.

But that's TV to TV, so the resolution would be on the same level. A feature film's digital model would be far more detailed, more time-consuming and expensive to render. TV series digital effects need to be lower-resolution, generally. I'm not sure whether you could just take a feature-ready model and downgrade its resolution a bit, or if you'd need to create a separate model.

You can set the resolution during the render process. So you can use movie level cg models for TV. The higher detail will add to the render time, but that would of course be weighed against the time/expense to create a lower detail model.
