One of the things 2009 blew out of the water was the idea that CG always has to look fake. It's sort of hard to imagine Star Trek past a certain point when you have a gap in production of films or series. TMP was a big "wow" for people who hadn't seen Star Trek in that scale or with that kind of budget. Similarly, 2009 did the same for us with CG. I never thought CG could feel real to me the way model shots did. But I was blown away with how real everything looked in 2009. Old school model shots never get old for me, though!
As good as CG has become, it still doesn't really work with people/alien/"living" models. Unless they're shots from the distance, I still look at most of them and think "animation," and sometimes that takes me out of the movie, whatever movie that may be. That's one of the few disappointments I had with the new Star Wars. I'm sure that will improve drastically over time as well. It's an exciting time to be alive!
