The First Trailer

The Klingon BOP was the most elastically fantastic ship in the galaxy, able to grow up to 10 times it's usual size depending on how many whales you put inside it.

One of the things 2009 blew out of the water was the idea that CG always has to look fake. It's sort of hard to imagine Star Trek past a certain point when you have a gap in production of films or series. TMP was a big "wow" for people who hadn't seen Star Trek in that scale or with that kind of budget. Similarly, 2009 did the same for us with CG. I never thought CG could feel real to me the way model shots did. But I was blown away with how real everything looked in 2009. Old school model shots never get old for me, though! :techman:

As good as CG has become, it still doesn't really work with people/alien/"living" models. Unless they're shots from the distance, I still look at most of them and think "animation," and sometimes that takes me out of the movie, whatever movie that may be. That's one of the few disappointments I had with the new Star Wars. I'm sure that will improve drastically over time as well. It's an exciting time to be alive!

While the bridge model used for the closeups is noticeably different, I'm not so sure the apparent differences in the bridge module between the first two pics couldn't be explained away simply by the differences in lighting and perspective.

That's what I'd thought at first, but (to me at least) it looks like the entire area sits up closer to the dome on top compared to the other.

Could just be the lighting and perspective though. It just seemed like it was raised to make it less incongruous with the close up version, but I'm probably seeing things :D
I'm really not fussed about it, either way. If they changed it a little, great; if they didn't, that's fine, too.

Oh for sure, I just love the NuConnie design, and figured the trailer thread was the best place to gush over all the little details on it that could be seen.

Agreed, which is why I like that the aliens we've seen in the 2009, STiD, and Beyond haven't been CGI by and large. I'm really glad that we're going to have more distinctly alien characters in Beyond, it seems like a lot of the talent they've had has been wasted on the background characters who only have a line or two, if that.

Yeah, they've changed the scale of that ship at least 3 or 4 times now. I've given up on trying to figure out how big it's supposed to be.

Another reason to go back to physical models.

If you think that the physical models weren't shot and matted to different scales from shot to shot you weren't paying attention.

They're never going back to physical models.

All correct. I was originally going to mention this and other scaling inconsistencies with filming miniatures but M'Sharak asked us not to go down that rabbit hole, so I stood down. I agree that it doesn't need to be rehashed yet again.

I think the one scaling shot that was done right was admittedly in Generations, at the end, where we see a Nebula class, a Miranda class, and an Oberth class warping off into space. That looked to be about correct. :)

And that's all I'll say on it.

Back on track:

Loved the trailer. Likely will love the movie. :D

I was waiting to see the trailer on the big screen as was told it would be before TFA but it wasn't!! didnt get BvS, ID2, XMen either! (I got Civil War, Danish Girl, and Snoopy, oh and Deadpool.)

anyway have finally seen it online HD and first impressions are its 2009 Trek meets TOS (the look of certain planetscapes etc) meets Gold Key (the look of the comics brought to life) meets Generations (ship crash on planet) meets Insurrection (some kind of feud on the planet) with a dash of Nemesis (Reman like make up)

Is it just me or did they update the height of the bridge area on the saucer?

It looks taller and narrower than the one they'd used in STiD for distance shots.

But shorter and wider than the one they used for closeups.

Looks like the high detail one they composite with live-action footage (i.e. the one that matches the window on set), just seen from a different angle and distance. Here's a comparison of the two windows from virtually the same angle.

We had BvS, ID2 and Civil War.

Freaking Independence Day. My brain keeps saying 'this is gonna suck', but my inner 12 year old keeps bouncing around going 'Bill Pullman is saying the thing!'

Stupid super effective, not-quiet-Dylan-Thomas poem.

Trailers: Star Trek Beyond, Batman v Superman, Captain America Civil War, Warcraft, Fantastic Beasts and ID2.

So I'm wondering if the trailer did in fact reveal too much. It's appearing to me that the Enterprise gets attacked and crashes on the planet and the crew is separated. Somehow Kirk rescues the crew with the help of the new female lead and find the derelict USS Franklin, which has also crashed on the planet. They attempt to re power the ship to fight the baddies and return to earth. Or am I reading too much into the trailer?

I don't think so.

I don't know the movie is about or what planet they're on and so forth. I doubt the casual viewer knows anything either...except that Idris Elba is under a lot of makeup and there is this exotic 'white' alien...and Kirk is on a motorcycle rather than a hovercycle....and that there is Beastie Boys in the 23rd century.

No I think you're right on the mark. That would appear to be what happens in a nutshell. It gave away quite a bit. Maybe that's why TPTB really don't like the trailer too. There will be plenty more character moments and stuff sure but I think we've got the synopsis down.

So, just want to say that I've seen Star Wars twice, and neither time has the Star Trek trailer played before it. Weird, thought it was supposed to play before Star Wars.
