The First Trailer

My first reaction: this is not Star Trek.
Yeah, it is. Trek has been different things to different people spanning decades. This is just the latest iteration. TNG wasn't TOS. DS9 wasn't TNG. ST09 wasn't ENT.

It didn't give me any Star Trek feeling at all and that for a franchise that celebrates its 50th anniversary next year.
Anniversaries mean dick in Hollywood. Bond had it's 50th in 2012 and had about 3 seconds of the original riff in Skyfall. That's about it.

I'm not a big Star Wars fan, but the trailer for The Force Awakens left me wanting for more and left me with feelings of nostalgia.
Probably because they cast the 1977 cast. It's built in.

The trailer for Star Trek Beyond left me feeling empty.
That's fine. Not everything is going to be for everyone.

One or two good things: Karl Urban of course and it seems earth finally isn't in danger.
Does that why it doesn't feel like Star Trek? Earth was in danger in TMP, TVH, FC, and NEM (and yes, 09 and ID). So it's not like the numovies are the only ones who beat that into the ground.

And there was only Excelsior in Spacedock in SFS and Enterprise was the only starship at Earth in TFF.

There are lots of tired themes in original Trek.

The rest, meh. Anyone claiming this trailer feels like TOS should have their heads examined.
The themes are the same. The visuals are modern.

And I'm all for change btw. Star Trek Beyond shouldn't be The Voyage Home or First Contact, but should feel like Star Trek and it really doesn't.
Movie that "feel" the way Star Trek felt aren't popular today. If you're waiting for sitting around a table and talking about evil empires needing our help then you're going to be waiting for all these action packed movies to fall out of style - and that'll be a while.

...I hate even more watching fans act as de facto PR arms for the studios, greedily chowing down on whatever extreme stupidity gets vomited up and shouting down anyone who dares be unhappy with any aspect of it.
That's a good example of what's symptomatic about the story of Disney's Defenders of Mediocrity where the defense of a product by uber loyal fans actually results in the lowering of standards because the company is made to believe everyone is happy with their objectively substandard product. But is the quality actually lower in this case because fans seem happy to defend anything Paramount releases in the name of Star Trek? We probably need to see the film first to make that determination.

Could it be possible that the people defending the product, actually like the product?
Absolutely. It's an inherent or necessary condition.

Not much here to make a judgement call on the over all film. Only a few gripes about the trailer. The music. The new Star Wars trailers don't resort to (c)rap/rock. Why can't Star Trek? And the Big E getting destroyed.. Again... And I detest JJ-Prise. But have some pride in the ship. The Enterprise is as much a character in previous shows and films as the Kirk and crew. But the new films treat her like a ford pinto with exploding gas tanks. Couldn't they come up with another way to strand them?

It has been out for less than twelve hours. Let's see how the numbers do after months of people looking at it.

Well I hope it gets better, but I also hope they take this response into consideration when making trailer #2.

So it's running 2-to-1 for? 66% of the people like the trailer? Seems like a success to me.

That's actually pretty horrible for a youtube ratio.

BvS is 13-to-1
SW:TFA is 38-to-1

I seem to remember that Batman vs. Superman's first trailer didn't fair too well early on.

The Star Trek official site version has almost 1.1 million views but i don't have a way to gauge what percentage liked it.

Still, "liking" or disliking a trailer may mean different things...some may love the trailer in general but the experience may have been ruined by the music or the fact that someone they like dies, etc.

The new Star Wars trailers don't resort to (c)rap/rock. Why can't Star Trek?

Because they're different movies?

The Enterprise is as much a character in previous shows and films as the Kirk and crew. But the new films treat her like a ford pinto with exploding gas tanks. Couldn't they come up with another way to strand them?

The original Enterprise was redesigned and destroyed.
The Enterprise D was destroyed.

Seems to be honoring the history of the franchise.

Because Star Wars takes place in a different galaxy. In the Star Trek universe, rap and rock are part of its history. I'm glad they've moved away from just classical music.

 BLASPHEMER!

Just getting tired of the elitist bullshit. I'm tired of hearing lowest common denominator/defenders of mediocrity nonsense over a fucking movie.

Totally get it, Bill. Just messing with you. This bull is getting really old.

Star Trek should be fun. I don't want to watch a bunch of people waxing philosophical sitting around a fucking table for two hours. It should be about a crew on a mission, exploring the unknown, having some adventures and maybe learning a thing or two.

The fact that the vocal minority can't see that this is what Star Trek is supposed to be and that this is exactly what this trailer showing and having to listen to it on a regular basis is a fucking exhausting task.

They don't like it? Fine. But don't tell me its not Star Trek. It's just not the Star Trek they want.

Also calling it "crap" really make you show your age. Maybe they'll put in some Perry Como and get the 65-dead demo.

It's the Beastie Boys. Show some fucking respect.

...And the Big E getting destroyed.. Again... have some pride in the ship. The Enterprise is as much a character in previous shows and films as the Kirk and crew.
Yes, thank you!

Then you'd prefer to have Kirk blow her up?

Also calling it "crap" really make you show your age. Maybe they'll put in some Perry Como and get the 65-dead demo.
Just say Hitler wouldn't like it either and get it over with.
You're cute.

Well, I guess the silver lining is that there was a link to a The Little Prince trailer on the right, so I didn't waste 10 minutes* of my life clicking on the OP link for nothing.

(*I watched it 6 times so far.)

(**Now back for a seventh.)

Mirroring my remarks up thread, I'm as big of a hipster, pretentious prog fan as it gets, and even I think calling Beasties "crap" is fucking ridiculous.

So write about why it's good instead of why anyone who thinks it's bad is ridiculous. It's a more credible point of view.

In the Star Trek universe, rap and rock are part of its history.

I just don't think grounding it in current popular culture is a good call for a futuristic SF movie.
That's a good real world point of view and observation. Do you think this will date Guardians of the Galaxy?
