The Final Frontier - the best of the series?

Many media outlets will say, in retrospect, that Summer of 89 was one of the best, if not THE best, blockbuster summers.

Does that make me a summer blockbuster? I was born in the summer of 1989. :)

As a matter of fact, I was born three days before Star Trek V opened in theaters.

A few good character moments don't make up for the severe flaws, IMO.

Shatners visual direction is pretty good throughout...the opening is certainly one of the best in Trek, and is very cinematic.

I thought, aside from TMP, this is the other film that looked most like a movie from a visual direction standpoint. There's some very cool stuff in terms of the location shots, and a lot of the stuff in the Observation Lounge is very well done as well. The VFX and re-use of TNG sets takes away from that in some places...but if you look just purely at the direction, quite honestly, I think it is excellent.

I can agree with this - it didn't have the 'TV movie' look of some of Nimoy's work for sure. If only the effects had been better, I'd look on the film much more favourably.

It definitely has some beautiful cinematic moments. That opening is so evocative, it's perfect.
I also think that the landing and walk across Sha Ka Ree's planet is beautiful, musically and cinematography/directing-wise. However it is a pity they weren't able to budget for a more unique and striking planetary set there. I still think that scene has a sense of wonder to it.

^^ My favorite sequence in all of the Trek films is from the moment the "Big 3" decide to stick together in the observation lounge through the exploration of Sha Ka Ree (up to the beam shooting out at the Enterprise). The dialogue, music, visuals, etc are all exactly what I love about Star Trek.

My next two favorite sequences (in order) are the sneak attack in TWOK and stealing the Enterprise (from jailbreak to Excelsior sputter) in TSFS.

TFF is not a great movie, but it does have its' merits.

1. I like the fact that Paradise City (and Nimbus III as a whole) is basically a neglected dumping ground. For one, it gives a rare view of life outside the confines of Starfleet. Two, it's a reminder that even a place like the Federation would have its' unsavory elements. Third, life on the frontier is a hardscrabble existence in the best of circumstances, and Nimbus III is a hard place to live.

2. Sybok is not the typical Trek villain. He's definitely different from characters like Khan or Kruge. Sybok is charismatic and intelligent, but also understandably dangerous. When he recognizes the Sha Ka ree entity is not what he believed it to be, Sybok turns from it to defend the others from its' attacks, and ultimately sacrifices himself to that end.

It's not the best of the movie series, but there are a lot of things I love about The Final Frontier. It was really the only film that got the friendship between the big three correct from the original. I wonder if they had a better visual effects crew if that movie would have been greatly improved. Yes there's some corny dialog, but there is some great dialog and scenes too, like the "I need my pain" scene.

Forget 'i need my pain!' it should've been 'I need ILM!'

Some of the most sublime single scenes in all of Trek are tucked away in this film. But it's also the most frustrating film as the FX and some of the production values are so poor, it's impossible to ignore. In some ways it'd be easier if it was a bad film in every sense. It's not the charm of FX done on a shoestring as one loves with TOS but the annoyance that comes with watching the work of inept production people.

I love all of the original cast movies but , for me, The Final Frontier is the best one. I love the campfire scenes and get chills when Kirk says " I've always known - I'll die alone"

Anyone else love this fun and emotional film?

The notion of flying out into outer space to meet God in a STAR TREK movie ... no good can come from that. And it didn't, not in this movie. But I love the casting of the non-regulars and to see Shatner giving Kirk this "Valentine," if you will, says to me that STAR TREK has always meant a little more to him than he's here-to-fore let on ...
