The film reminds me of "Broken Bow"

The last scene. While very TOSish, it's also like the last scene in ENT pilot, ready to set off, but we only had to wait a week for the next adventure, now we have to wait two years.

The beginning is very earthbound.

just the overall structure.. it's very similar to the plotting and pace of Broken Bow

The last scene here, the last scene in "Broken Bow" and the last scene in the TNG pilot are similar: everyone assembled on the bridge and ready to set out on their travels, with the last on-camera line delivered by the captain.

Well, that's a bit harsh. I actually had some hope for ENT after I watched Broken Bow. It was just everything after it that sucked.

And the last scene in "Emissary" was them hanging around the Promendae either bickering or talking procedures/shop.

Hmmm. Fascinating.

This kind of ending in a first episode is a popular literary tool, a theme if you will, standing for "established set and characters, setting out into a longer journey". You have that a lot in films, tv shows etc. In sitcoms, people usually end up sitting on a couch at the end of the first ep.

Well this was essentially a pilot for our latest crew, albeit a $150 million dollar one

The bulk of this movie's first act takes palce on Earth aside from the detour to Vulcan for a scene or two and the prologue in space. The action with Kirk and the Vette, Kirk in the bar, Kirk in the shipyard, and Kirk at the academy: All on Earth.
