The Fifth Element

Always enjoyed this film when Chris Tucker wasn't on the screen. It was just a sequence of moments that all played nicely together. It was colourful, basically a throwback to the matinee era and was generally holds up well.

Lucas's Phantom Menace II Society came out 2 years after this piece of crap, but one must wonder if the pollution & stench of Jar Jar Binks & his Bad Bombin' Gungans in PM weren't the influence & result of Tucker's loathsome crapachter in 5th Hell-ement.

If I would have reviewed this movie coming out of the theater the grade would have been very poor. I've seen it several times since and really like it. I'm in agreement that Tucker grates, but the film overall has an offbeat sensibility (the word "fun" has been used aptly in this thread) that makes it enjoyable. It's also quite the visual spectacle.

I don't know that I've had such a turn around on my perception of a film. It may be one of those you have to be in the right mood to see.

That bit with the roach camera spy being used by CT's “Jar Jar Binks”was a good idea, but WASTED in this fecal garbage movie.

Um, that was Tricky as Zorg's henchmen using the roach spy thing, not Chris Tucker.

My bad:o

I only suffered through this flick once in the theater back in June of 97:eek:

So, I forgot some things'bout it like it was Borg lackey Twiki doing the Roach Trick, & not the proto-Jar Jar.

To best put how I feel about this film, I'll quote Dr. Zachary Smith:

“Oh, the pain!”

Everyone is aware that the character is supposed to be grating and obnoxious, right?

I never quite got how his ten minutes of screen time could be deemed so annoying by so many, especially when that was the entire point of the character. It's a fanboy reaction up there on the predictability scale with hating Ben Affleck and the Star Wars PT (except the fight b/t Obi-Wan and Anakin because that was just so freaking kewl!)

Man, I think I've been hanging around here too long...

LOVE The Fifth Element. It shows the kind of free-wheeling creativity sadly lacking in SF/F in America these days. I'm relatively tired of every single movie having to try to conform to some sort of naturalism or believability meter. Sometimes it's good to just have a beautiful, over the top romp for the sheer wacky joy of it.

Characters who by design are obnoxious walk a thin line. It's not always going to work for everyone. Tucker didn't for me. On the other hand, Gaius Baltar's nearly every moment on screen irritates me. Yet I think he's a fantastic character. Although somewhat less succesful, Vince Vaughn's character in the movie "Made" is another example. Irritating. Entertaining.

Well said as always, Lapis.

The Fifth Element is a really fun movie. If you are interested in more work by Luc Besson, I highly recommend Le Femme Nikita, The Professional and Angel*A. All 3 are worth the rental.

QFT.

And in case I forgot to mention it in previous posts, the soundtrack is awesome.

EXACTLY! :techman:

Bruce Willis is supposed to make you feel excited and strong.
Leeloo is supposed to arouse you (yes, even for the women).
The priest is supposed to make you smile...
...and Chris Tucker is supposed to annoy you!

I, too, can not understand the people who complain about him.

"Oh, I'm sorry, yes, please go back to watching a plate of Jell-O form in the 'fridge since apparently having an emotion bothers you so much. Jesus, what's the point of even watching movies if you're going to be annoyed when they make you feel things? Most people consider that a mark of a good film!"

Sorry. I just had to get that out there.

Let's just leave it at this: You were supposed to like Jar-Jar Binks, and that failed. You weren't supposed to like Chris Tucker, which means they succeeded fabulously.

If Ruby Rhod was supposed to be annoying, then he damn well succeeded.

That being said, I thought the idea of a DJ that could carry his whole studio around like that, was really cool.

For some reason I can't not watch this movie if I see it's on. Like people have said; it's quirky, funny, sad and has some great effects.

Yes Tucker was grating but his performance grows on me more everytime I see it. I love how that young woman is beside herself when he's up close talking to her. He's just so flamboyant.

Aziz - light!

Bring me the Priest.

I saw it once, and thought it was kind of meh. I'll admit I'm not a huge fan of Milla Jovovich, so she doesn't do much for me. But I haven't seen the full movie in a long while, so I'd be willing to watch it again to give a more advanced opinion.

:techman:

How does one go wrong with Gary Oldman and Bruce Willis in bright colors and explodey guns, and one-liners that are funny?

Not a huge fan of Chris Tucker's involvement, but other than that it's a great film. One of the few in which the primary hero never meets the primary villain. :D
Such as TWOK? :)

Oh, I would disagree with that. It may have been a viewscreen but Kirk and Khan had several scenes "together" and exchanged dialog.

I loved Fifth Element. One of the most believable visions of mundane civilian life in the future I've ever seen.

Oh sure, some of the science is a little off. That's where you kick back and just enjoy the fantasy romp. But I love most the atmosphere it creates. I'd rank it right up there with Blade Runner in terms of the feel of the future.
