The Fifth Element

I hated this film the first time I saw it. Had rented it on video, thought it had an interesting concept, looked sci-fi enough... and gaped perplexed at the screen the whole time, shaking my head when the film finally ended at a film that seemed completely upside down.

And yet...

I found scenes stuck in my head. The techno/opera fight sequence, notably. The wild costuming. Yes, even Christ Tucker's turn as hetero Liberace. When it passed again on television, I watched it again, telling myself I was doing so for Milla Jovovich wearing naught but thermal bandages if nothing else. And, without the expectations I'd had previously, knowing it was as an much off-beat comedy as anything else, really enjoyed it. The film grew on me to the point that I now own the DVD, and pop it in from time to time when I just want loud, garish, meaningless fun.

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

Being a long time reader of Heavy Metal magazine, when I first viewd this movie at the theatre I immediately understood where it was coming from and have enjoyed it immensely.

I loved it from the first time I saw it in the theatre. It's one of those movies I'll always stop to watch if I com across it while I'm channel surfing. I can't wait to watch after I've purchased my HDTV in the summer. Does anyone know if it's available in Blu-Ray?

"Mool-ti-pass" :D

It's good fun, nothing to serious, well played by all. It's not really a film I have to be in any particular mood to watch, if it's on I'll happily sit down and watch.

Fun. The Fifth Element is lots of fun. I've seen it several times and the combination of action, comedy, over-the-top designs, sfx and trashiness just make it highly enjoyable, I think. I have no idea what Besson was thinking when he made this, though :D.

One of my favorite movies. Probably a more realistic vision of the future than Star Trek! And just about everyone in it is awesome.

I wasn't aware Star Trek was a vision of the future. In any case Fifth Element's hold on reality is summed up by:

It was daft from start to finish with very little attention to realistic timing, for instance. I enjoyed it hugely for the fantasy romp it was.

Same vibe I got from it. Movie just screams French/Italian sci-fi.

"Negative. I am a meat popsickle."

"Anyone else want to negotiate?"

Great movie, and if you think about it, The Fifth Element is almost a live action version of the cult classic, Heavy Metal.

That never occurred to me, but you're right, it does have a few things in common.

It's the "Gay" Star Wars. Or so all my gay friends tell me.

Now that you mention it, I can see that.

So can I.

I actually really love the movie. As others have said, it skewed just enough off center to stay fun and not become just another action/scifi flick.

Would it help if I was "medicated" while I watched it? ;)

Dude, that always helps, even if the movie isn't bad. (Although there have been several occasions when ever that couldn't help me make it through a bad film.)

I love it. One of my favorites. It's one of those movies I can pop in any time and still get a kick out of it no matter how many times I've seen it. I love the weirdness of it, the awesome production design, the music, and the comedy. Hell, I even like Chris Tucker in it. It's also one of those few films where I can quote most of it because it's full of memorable dialogue.

I love this film. The inspired zaniness, the entertainingly campy performances, the set designs, the memorable lines of dialogue, the music... it all came together to create rollicking good movie. No, it doesn't really make much sense, but that is, of course, part of the fun!

Starts great then gets exponentially crappier & worse as the movie progressed.

Chris Tucker is unbearably obnoxious & irritating all through it. CT was basically the proto-Jar Jar Binks in this crapfest by Luke Bessen was it?

CT was so effing ann:mad:ying in T5E:brickwall:

That bit with the roach camera spy being used by CT's “Jar Jar Binks”was a good idea, but WASTED in this fecal garbage movie.

Lucas's Phantom Menace II Society came out 2 years after this piece of crap, but one must wonder if the pollution & stench of Jar Jar Binks & his Bad Bombin' Gungans in PM weren't the influence & result of Tucker's loathsome crapachter in 5th Hell-ement.
