The Fifth Element

I just finished watching The Fifth Element for the first time in a good while. What do you think of this Luc Besson film?

After I first watched the film, during its original theatrical release, I walked out of the theater not knowing whether or not I liked it. Still, there was a certain je ne sais quoi that appealed to me. I bought it years later on DVD, and I've enjoyed the film more and more with each subsequent viewing. Tonight I watched it on Blu Ray for the first time.

So what do I like about the movie? It's a fun mixture of sci-fi and mythology. The production design is top-notch artsy fartsy stuff. The costuming is brilliant. Mila Jovovich is great as Leeloo, Bruce Willis is once again a good Bruce Willisesque hero, Gary Oldman plays a quirky Zorg, and even Chris Tucker shines as Ruby Rhod.

I also enjoyed the juxtaposition of shots from different, simultaneously occurring scenes.

The Fifth Element isn't to be taken very seriously. It's just... fun. Great-looking fun.

Not a huge fan of Chris Tucker's involvement, but other than that it's a great film. One of the few in which the primary hero never meets the primary villain. :D

My favorite deli in NYC has a picture of Milla Jovovich in it. I wonder if she held her ticket up to the cashier and said "Mul-ti-pass".

It was a huge, action-adventure, special-effects extraveganza that, ironically, wasn't hollywood enough to be a hit.

Great film, but it skewed a little to sci-fi-ish to really be as popular as it could have been. But I wouldn't change a thing. I think it's great the way it is.

I love this movie for all its quirkiness. Its one of those films that I sometimes feel the need to pop in and watch.

It does have a European sensibility to it at least from what I can tell with my limited exposure to Euro comics.

The Fifth Element is pretty close to being a perfect movie, IMO. It's got such a great mixture of comedy, action science fiction, Heavy Metal magazine, Mila Jovavich, great visuals, a truly spiffy soundtrack... I like this movie a bit more every time i see it. Chris Tucker doesn't even bother me too much anymore. I really appreciate the imagination that went into this movie. wish there were more like it.

The only thing I know about that is that a German-exchange student my parents hosted at home for a month insisted on renting this movie from Blockbuster because she loved it, but had only seen the German translation and she really wanted to hear Bruce Willis' real voice.

Anyway, you just reminded me of that is all.

I just watched this movie twice this weekend on TNT. Went looking on the 'net to try and find info on a sequel. One of my favorite flicks. Tons of action, comedy, cool SFX.

About the music: Is it true that the song playing when the NYPD fleet is chasing Korben's taxicab, is not on the soundtrack CD?

Ya, Luc made it very French. It's good like that.

Sorry, I started thinking of other movies at female foreign exchange student.

Yeah, definitely Euro-scifi influenced... Which, given the people involved, makes perfect sense.

My favorite scene in the movie is in the beginning, when the robotic aliens depart their ship in Egypt 1914... One of the few truly "holy #$%#$&*!" moments I have had when watching a movie. The music, the alien-ness of the whole scene. (at 4:25 in this clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hlb0ATnRh9c) That short scene always gives my goosebumps.

Yeah, Fifth Element is one of my favorite movies as well... The quirkiness is much appreciated. And can resist "Leeloo Multi-Pass"?

One of my favorite movies. Probably a more realistic vision of the future than Star Trek! And just about everyone in it is awesome.

Not a fan at all. The appeal completely escapes me. I saw in the theatre in the first run. Seen little bits of it on cable over the years. My opinion was no different.
