The Fifth Element

Another vote for this movie.
The humour-especially from unexpected sources like the normally serious Ian Holm,or from Brion James(usually the heavy) is just spot on,while the slapstick of Lee Evans doesn't jar too much.
Visually the movie is stunning and makes such a pleasant change from the "Alien" school of sci-fi set design that dominates much of Hollywood's sci-fi output.
The great soundtrack also deserves a mention ...formidable!

Ok. I must be a humorless git!

I laugh at the jokes (some of them) but I still don't think this movie is any good.

Oh well...

I love this film, from the color to the music, the lines and images, the continuity (I'm thinking Corben having a single match left at the beginning of the film and it's there at the end)--all the little bits that come back to view.

"You ah fired!"

"Wow!"

"Weddings?" "No."

"Never without my permission." "Thought so."

Absolutely love this film. Also, one of the few times I didn't dislike Bruce Willis. well, not too much.

And best of all, no one decided to spoil it by making Fifth Element 2 (I think we can thank Milla for that; in her recent Maxim interview she mentioned any such sequel would have to be made without her because she thinks the first movie was fine as it is).

Wouldn't it have been called "The Sixth Element"?

Hey...i think i just came up with the title of a new SyFy Saturday night movie :brickwall:

Anyway -- to me, The Fifth Element is like Robocop in terms of style : A combo action/sci-fi/satire that's fun to watch.

I'd have to watch again, but there are some things that are commentary on our modern lifestyle (or where that would go in the future). Chris Tucker's character, for example, really seems like an extreme of today's media divas. (I also found it ironic that he's doing a galactic RADIO show...no TV/visual? So no one's REALLY watching him in his "fashion"?)

It's an excellent movie if you take it in the appropriate context. You don't watch this movie as a serious take on anything except maybe the ludicrous-ness of predicting the future. This is more about style than anything else.

I like it more now than I did before. I even go out of my way to watch parts of it on occasion. The visuals are spectacular, and it has some funny moments... but a lot of the humor is WAY too slapstick and infantile for my tastes.

Love it. Great fun and I think it definetly has a different flavor then it would have had had it not been directed by a Frenchman.
About the soundtrack, though: My favorite part was the song that was playing when Korben's taxi is being chased by the NYC police. I heard that this song isn't on the soundtrack though. :( Can anyone confirm?
Nope pretty sure it's not on the soundtrack. It's called "Alech Tradi" by Cheb Khaled, sometimes just called Khaled.

I've consistently picked the Fifth Element as my favorite movie for years. Love it.

"Sir, are you classified as human?"
"Negative, i am a meat popsicle."
