The Far Side

I remember early Gary Larson. And with some of his comics, I was stunned to find that he used ideas I'd previously thought of myself. And I was like -- "Hey, if he can do it, well so can I!" I did create a bunch of similar joke drawings like his with my own style and ideas. A few actually ran in my school paper. But... I soon learned that it's far more about the clever mind than a few ideas. I ran dry fairly quick. But Larson? He kept going and going. And got better too! I was very humbled by him. A bit jealous for a time, but that later fell away. I think his style of humor is fantastic. He's right up there with Scott Adams (Dilbert), in terms of creativity.
By the way, Gary Larson doesn't want us posting his comics online:

The only problem with this as an open-ended declaration, is that his art will fade out of the social conversation much faster. Cartoon images get reposted all the time. In fact, it probably helps drive sales, as some people would be alerted to the comic and then want a book. Like in this topic. But I do agree that a humor/comics oriented site should not just openly repost cartoons without author consent. On membership based forums like this, I would think it shouldn't cause any harm--first because of the viewership is so incredibly small, but also because it doesn't go anywhere else--this site doesn't facilitate embedding on other sites.

Well, the strip ended on January 1, 1995 and so far we've not forgotten him.

I did the same thing, too -- I made one-panel comics with him as the inspiration. I think I had some published in a local advertiser my mother ran long ago (yeah, I guess it helped ;-). I even submitted to comic strip publishers to try and get it in papers. Never ran out of ideas (though it's not like I had to make five new ones a day), but I never had a shot.

I'm pretty sure I worked at this company for several horrifying years.

there is even a more limited version of the hardcover that comes with a lithographed panel. I'm happy with my paperback. I sent one to my niece for her birthday as well. Only $50..

I'm trying to think of a good panel to use as a shirt? Any suggestions. I used "The real reason dinosaurs became extinct" for friend already so I won't use it even though it's iconic.

Gary Larson used to frequent the same coffee shop here in Seattle that my Aunt did.

He would come in the morning and would sit at a table reading the local paper.

The staff and the the locals knew who he was, but there was an unofficial policy not to approach him as he was someone who appreciated his privacy.

As my Aunt tells it, one of the new employees didn't get the message and one day asked him for his autograph.

He looked up at the employee and without saying a word, gathered up his belongings, left and never came back.

Yeah i can understand that. I would never ask him if I saw him out and about. Also I'm generally not someone who even cares about having someone's autograph. However, Larson is absolutely brilliant and I honestly would love nothing more than for him to autograph my Complete Far Side slip case, but only in an environment such as a comic convention. That would be amazing.

There is a doc that came out last month on Documentary Now! called Seeking Gary Larson, about a fan that wants to meet him. I have not seen it because I only have cable internet .. not cable TV .

According to a quick search, it's called "Searching for Mr. Larson: A Love Letter From the Far Side".

No full video is up unless you want to pay for a view on Youtube, which isn't something I'll ever be doing.

But I hope if he finds him, two things happen (and I'll be disappointed it they don't happen):

1. There is a sign outfront that says "Beware of Doug".

2. Gary answers the door by saying, "Howdy, howdy, howdy."
