The Fan of Time

So here we are, in the year 2009. A new Star Trek movie is coming our way, and with it, hopefully, a new breath of life for the franchise. Looking back at the entire 'entity' of Star Trek, when, for you, was everything 'just right' with the Trek universe? Are you one who looks back at the void between TOS and TMP and the birth of true Trek fandom? Or, when TNG was on, and thinking, This..is the best time to be a Trek fan"....

When, as a fan, was your favorite time being... a fan of Star Trek?

For me?? I have two eras that I like alot. The area between TMP and KHAN was fun because the books started coming out and, for the most part, they were really good back then. Thats when I did most of my Trek "reading".

Then the era when DS9 was in its fourth season and when FC came out....both DS9 and TNG were clicking. I didn't watch Voyager, but I thought the other two were really at their best and that meant, to me, TREK was riding high....

I do like this era we are in now. It reminds me a lot of the build up before TMP came out...meaning, a lot was riding on that movie and, i think, a lot more is riding on this one...

When DS9 ruled the Trekverse, 1993-onwards.;)

Yeah, I'd say that this was the time I enjoyed being a Trek fan most and when I was the most passionate about it. But I think it also has to do with my age at the time. I was a teenager then, and in general the world looked promising and like mine for the taking.
During the last year or so I've found out that there are Sci Fi series I find superior to Trek (that were even around before Trek or the majority of the Trekverse anyway), so I'm more like a casual fan now, I guess. (At least as far as the tv series are concerned. My interest has shifted to the books.)
That said, I think that everything's still right in the Trekverse. Just because the last Trek was cancelled and/or not that good doesn't warrant the apocalyptic visions some people had. The franchise is still strong and has a big fan base.

When "First Contact" hit the theaters, DS9 did "Call To Arms" and VOY came with "Scorpion". Roughly the same year, IIRC. A great time for Trek.

It was great to be a Trek fan until Jeri Taylor left Voyager. Then it was all downhill from there until the resounding crash that was Enterprise.

Personally, I was never really a fan of Jeri Taylor. I like what Michael Piller was trying to do with the series better (they never seemed to be on the same page there, and UPN, of course, was on a page entirely different from both of them).

Around the 6th season of TNG. DS9 was on the air, they were talking about TNG movies, and a new season to replace TNG. Even TOS actors were all around, and doing relatively well, (AFAIK). Everything in Trek was on the rise.

The last two years of TNG, when DS9 started, there were lots of conventions, and we were all looking forward to VOY and TNG movies. It seemed back then that Trek would be around forever.

Yep...those were the best years..I agree...

Though, I did like the months of antcipating TMP. And although TMP has it flaws, it is still my favorite Star Trek "movie" experience. The waiting in the line...getting the popcorn..watching that opening battle with Vgr...great times...

I would say when TNG was on in the mid to latter part of the series. You had TNG and DS9 going and it seemed like it was in the mainstream more than it feels like now. It was almost cool (somewhat) to be a trek fan. Now it seems like we're back to being uber nerds or geeks for liking trek.

1986-1997 were my peak years. But I've always been a true & true Trekker!

Going to see Voyage Home with non-trekkie friends at the theater(and they liked the movie too!) was the upshoot of Treks popularity.

Conventions followed. Fandom flourished before commercialism took over.

TNG had more viewers than ever in syndication. People talked about the newest episode at the water cooler. Trek was cool!

Undiscovered Country Premiere at the Mann in Hollywood, with fresh prints from TOS cast! Good times!

DS9 then TNG movie buzz and VOY. Peak. Oversaturation but lovin' it!

FC high lasted until INS crashed the buzz. VOY so-so, but DS9 better than ever.

VOY only, in decline. Bit of a bump for ENT, but burnout had set in, ST was merely a cult thing again.

Now 2009 is like the build up to TMP 1979. Yikes, 30 years ago! And that's not counting nearly a decade of TOS that 70's show wonder years ramp up momentum.

^Yeah, Insurrection is what brought the party crashing down to a halt. When FC came out, Trek was cool. Everyone was expecting another FC when INS was released. Even the 15 year old me came out of INS wondering 'What the hell was THAT?'

I'm hoping the new movie can help bring 'the buzz' back!

I'll agree with this. Mid 90s was an excellent time to be a fan.

The mid-90s were a really fun time indeed to be a Trek fan. I recall going to the Starlog store (do they still have these today?) and finding an entire room devoted to all things Star Trek: action figures, model kits, books, magazines, costumes--you name it, they had it in that place.

This was around when Star Trek: Generations was about to come out in theaters. Deep Space Nine was on the air, and Voyager was getting ready to debut that January. It truly felt then that Star Trek was invincible and here to stay.

Here's hoping the new movie revives that spirit again.

^I know. Back then, it felt like Trek had 'made it' and that it would be around forever. Only a few short years later, the 'burn out' had begun, and we were a cult again :(

Hopefully the new film can change all that.

In late 90s for me. It was the time of Voyager and big Trek movies. :) It was also the time when I absorbed internet as a part of my life and found the wonderful worlds of fandoms and such.
