How are Holden and the crew supposed to gain control of the Tachi with a Martian Officer on the ship?

It's called writing and plot development, you give the Lopez/Kelly character motivation, a father exiled to the rocks in the asteroid belt, a little brother he needs to save, give him a dying sister, you give him a shocking video-email to read, give him an insubordination and misconduct charge, you leave him unconscious in the medic bay whatever....you simply WRITE how he joins the crew....you know the books are a bit meh anyways and if the series is to improve its books should only be used as a guide. You can rise above the books you know, the show doesn't have to copy a book page for page. There are many times when tv shows and movies were superior to the books. Lopez/Kelly was a good character on the tv I thought this actor was interesting, the rest of the main cast kind suck, I don't really feel the connection or feel chemistry.
I don't really feel much from Holden's first person perspective in the books either. I think many of the characters in the books read poorly, they read a bit more like a video game plot or RPG instead of a classic scifi novel. Actor Thomas Jane, is great he has really made a bland character come to life and the actors around him are good don't really care for much else of the show. Too bad they killed this Lopez/Kelly character, I think the actor added a lot to the show.

Yeah, keeping Lopez around would have served no purpose other than being different from the book. Don't get me wrong, an adaptation shouldn't be a carbon copy of the source material and deviations and changes should be expected and encouraged. But those changes should be done for a reason of story necessity and not just be different for the sake of being different.

Especially since it kind of derails the plot seeing as he would be able to get them to Mars without them having to explain why they have a Martian Navy frigate.

They have already deviated from the novels by fleshing out the Miller/Havelock thread. Didn't Havelock leave Ceres after the riots in the books - and he was the one who helped figure out the stuff about Julie's flightpath.

I guess this is down to the fact the series is condensing down a lot of stuff into a week or two whereas in the novel, we were already about a month in?

My only major 'huh' moment was the set design for the kitchen. The circular planter. Man, those plants are sturdy for handling max burn upside down. :p
That circular planter is likely a hydroponics setup for using a minimum amount of water. I googled "rotary garden" and got a lot of pics of similar setups.

Yeah, when things were getting decidedly anti-Earth on Ceres Havelock basically got the 'time to GTFO' message and left.

The show has Miller catching a lot more Star Helix/Earth type shit than the book does. He's an accepted Belter in the book w/o getting much shit for working for Earth. (there is some, not much)

If they had an active Martian Naval officer on the Roci I think it'd make a lot of later things that go on a lot more difficult to happen...

I want to comment on what I think is going to happen with a certain character and how it deviates from the end of the book - but I can't find the spoiler option now!?

But they are adapting THIS story. You don't like it, that's fine. But they aren't going to go completely off script.

Your complaint is otherwise similar to asking why Gandalf had to die in LOTR:FOTR. Why couldn't they simply WRITE around that? He was such a cool character!

It strikes me that there needs to be some sort of reason for keeping Havelock around on Ceres - since he's never truly essential to the plot of the book outside of being the one who helps Miller link some later plot-points.

I'm wondering if we're going to get Havelock being the one who sacrifices himself on Eros, and then an all new plot cultivated for Miller in Season Two much like they created a new plot for Avarasala in Season One..

Yeah, it's worth keeping in mind that the writers of the book are writers on the show too, so there probably won't be any major deviations unless there's a really good reason for it.

Had the day off of work. Watched all 5 episodes. It started a little slowly, but I'm glad I stuck with it, it's been pretty entertaining overall.

Then I read all 10 pages of this thread. The first thing that struck me was "who the heck is this Avasarala these people keep posting about?" I finally figured it out about 2-3 pages ago when someone mentioned the card game, but this show hasn't exactly done a great job with names. I basically know the characters by "this guy, that guy, and Thomas Jane". (Oh yeah, plus the guy from Royal Pains.)

Definitely liked the show though. And I'll be recommending it to a friend or two in the near future.

And I'll also agree that the Martian officer (Lopez?) was the most interesting guy in the show so far.

I can see something like this happening. Mostly because Thomas Jane is the first billed actor in the credits (and therefore, the show's lead), making it less likely Miller's going to have the same fate in the show as he does in the books, IMO.

Pretty sure a big show in recent years has disprove being the first name in the credits means anything.

Plus depending on how far they go in terms of the books Miller's fate is unavoidable.
