Everyone always jokes that "Spot is a shapeshifter" because she started out as a male Somali and somehow became a female tabby. But has it ever occurred to anyone that Data may have gone through two or more Spots? That, in his early quest to be the perfect cat owner, he neglected or somehow his cat died and he was forced to get a new one (which he just named Spot as a matter of course)?

DATA: I neglected to feed the first spot. When I attempted to have a typical pet ownership experience I broke the second spot's spine petting the animal. I stepped on the third spot breaking it's ribs. The fourth spot..
