The End Of Time Part 1 - Comment & Grading SPOILERS

if there is any real division? They are after all a telepathic species that we don't know what sort of ties their communities have ethereally... And what the fuck is this suddenly about timelords being able to physically smell each other over vast distances? Which given what we know about animals, they'd tend to collect in particular odour clusters and treat unfamiliar smelling Timelords with wariness.
I didn't think they were literally smelling each other-- it's the ability of one Time Lord to sense another that was established back in "The Sound of Drums".

Actually, it was established as long ago as "The End of the World."

Try (by implication) The Invisible Enemy.

The smell part of it, though, is certainly a reference to Survival, the last story of the classic series.

It was an interesting concept a while back, but now I'm getting a bit sick of the Doctor always going on about being the last of his kind. If the Time Lords are killed off again, I hope the Master manages to survive, so this idea is done with.

The only sense in which a "reset" might be annoying is that we're apparently about to get a brand new toy TARDIS and Forehead Boy as the Doctor.

That's pretty good! I thought I was the only one who thinks that the new Doctor is... well... pretty scary. :wtf: Also, in the interviews I've seen (maybe 2) he seems boring. He doesn't seem to have any life in him at all. So, I can only hope I will be wrong about not thinking that I'll like him. I hope he does not turn out to be another Sylvester McCoy. God, I could not stand him.

Oh on the TARDIS, the new version looks bad with the white windows. Not sure why they thought that was a good idea. No reason to change it anyway.

best wishes,
wws

God in heaven!

I just figured out some thing horrid about the new episode!

We have met a commentator narrator presentor of the facts from gallifrey before!

Every inch the otherworldly Dan Rather!

Runcible the Fatuous.

:)

And here was I thinking that he was the War Chief.

:guffaw::techman:

(BTW, if Dalton's character is killed at the end of the special, I think he should regenerate into Pierce Brosnan!:p)

 That would be insanely brilliant!

My friend has a theory that the old woman that appeared to Wilfred on the TV is the current incarnation of Susan. I'm hoping that we do get to see Susan and/or Romana in Part 2.
The fanboy in me loves it (Romana transmitting from E-Space?), but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Except changing everyone into the Master. That just brings Matrix sequel vibes and that can't be good. I just don't see the point.

My thoughts, as well.

Doctor Who is, by its essence, change. If you can't get on board with that notion, then you'll hate everything after your first Doctor...

I admit I was pretty underwhelmed the first time I saw this too... but the second time through I thought the story held together MUCH better. Everything seemed to build and develop a bit more believably I thought.

Hell, even the head-shaking "Master Race" thing at the end seemed less ridiculous. lol

It's certainly not one of the stronger RTD episodes, but I don't think it's quite the abomination people are making it out to be either...

I can't wait for this moment. From set pics, we know he's going to be messed up good.

In the trailer, it looks like glass explodes in a ship.

I wonder, if Tennant had committed to a season 5 and things played out the same(sans regeneration) what suit he would wear.

Looks like Doc 11 changed his tie at least! LOL Amy looks good in the little police outfit and mini!! Matt Smith looks like he just escaped the looney bin.

For those who haven't seen them, try tracking down the Sally Lockheart mysteries, starring Billie Piper. AFAIK, there's just 2, one of which is Ruby In The Smoke. Matt Smith's in them.

I was more at ease with the idea of him as the Doctor after watching them.

Well it was Rusty all over.

Wilf was great as always. The Ood were suitably foreboding. I'm, er, running out of nice things to say about it.. Oh I liked the scene in the cafe between Wilf & the Doc.

Otherwise this was an OTT cardboard-cut-out season ender a la RTD.

The resurrection of the Master was complete bollocks, wasn't it? We all knew it would involve the ring, but the ritual mumbo-jumbo was a bit much.

It actually momentarily reminded me of the Master's satanic rituals in The Daemons, and had me thinking about how they would have done this in old-Who. In old-Who they would have had the incantations etc, the demonic overtones, and perhaps some small effect, but there is no way they would have actually shown the master resurrecting. That would have been left unseen and for the imagination to fill in the gap. But IMO it would have worked much better that way. Actually seeing the Master resurrecting made it all look a bit cartoony. A bit silly.

I think I would have been happier with the resurrection if it had involved some technical boffinry rather than magic. They could have plugged the ring into some advanced alien instrument that genetically reconstructed him.

And now the Master is officially immortal? Not sure that was a wise thing to do - it's just more of the rot that started in the McGann pic. Here's hoping the timelords sort that one out..

And then there were the superpowers. I don't care if there is an in-story reason for it, it was ridiculous and it brought the whole story's credibility down a peg or two.

John Simm is getting on my nerves as usual. I have not warmed to him at all. He is just completely OTT not in a good way.

The cliffhanger was similarly ridiculous. I mean really, c'mon. It was like something out of a really bad cartoon.

I have mixed feelings about the Timelord reveal at the end. On the one hand it's good to see them back, and Dalton conveys quite a bit of gravitas. On the other it was entirely expected. I always thought that at the end of his run, Russell would "put the toys back in the box" as they say. And there did have to be oodles of them hovering on platforms didn't there - they looked rather like the Daleks at the end Bad Wolf.

There was quite a bit of padding too. People complain (sometimes rightly) about the old show's padding, but here it was pretty obvious. There was a couple of scenes which seem to have been entirely pointless.

Anyway, it's all big stupid over the top fun, as per Russell's usual tendencies.. Some will love it, others will loathe it. I'll shrug my shoulders and be thankful that at least the timelords are back..

Indeed. Nicely put :)

Had a thought with regards how Tennant will actually "die".

anyone else think Wilf will end up shooting him?

No, the thought really hadn't occurred to me.
I don't think that's likely, to be honest. It is a family show, after all, and having a dear old man shoot the Doctor for whatever reason would almost equal Jack killing his grandson.

Apologies if anyone's said this already, but I suspect that the TARDIS will be "healed" by the Immortality Gate, leading to its look in series five. They'll have to come up with a reason for the chameleon circuit to remain broken, of course. Or maybe Matt Smith will break it in the first episode. ;)

I won't be surprised if the Doctor gets a healing, too, since RTD had him give that bit of exposition about Time Lords being able to die while they're regenerating. Tennant becomes Matt Smith, becomes fatally wounded, then he and his forehead are dropped into the Gate.

I don't know if either of these are my predictions, per se, but I could see them happening.

ive rewatched it, I think my favourite shot is where Wilf is standing in front of the names of the people who died in the war, in the church, no way that isnt important.

It had crossed my mind a few times that Wilf would shoot the Doctor, not sure how that will happen however.

There were several key scenes where I thought the soundtrack was completely wrong: goofy and stupid and inappropriate.

There was a comedy-drum sound when Donna appeared that was like something out of a 60's variety show. You know, the sort of thing they play when Phyllis Diller shows up. Absolutely woeful.

Yes, I agree...I watched it again and thought the same thing, especially after the bit with the woman in white talking about him not killing anyone in the war...I fear that Wilf won't survive the final part... :(

Yeah I'm getting that feeling too. The Doctor and Wilf going down in a blaze of gloryl..only the Doctor will get back up again :(
