So I am sitting here at work watching The Enemy and a though occured to me. If the communicator is also the universal translator, then how are Geordi and the Romulan able to communicatesince the Romulan took Geordis communicator?? Besides the answer of the Romulan speaking english and Geordi speaking Romulan.

I often wonder how races in star trek communicate with each other...the universe speaking English? Unlikely. So many of the races the enterprise encounter are technologically backwards and so do not have any sort of universal translation devices at their disposal. But as praetorian pointed out, we just have to accept that it is Artistic license. =]

I think some races have the universal translator as an implant. In the DS9 episode Little green men it showed Nog, Quark and Rom as having a universal translator as an implant somwhere inside their ears, or something they could access through their ears at least.

One of the things that always got to me was the fact that every species actually looked like they were speaking english, rather than some very bad dubbing. Although, the translators could have some sort of holo-emitter that makes it look like they are speaking english. Another theory is that there is some form of drug that is released to make it look like it as well:lol:

Another thing is that on Klingon ships they spoke english. We could say that the translator did its job here, but then why do they shout something in Klingon all the time as well. Surely the Federation hasn't influenced the Klingons that much to make them speak their language all the time.

The Germans speak German-accented English in most of those movies about WWII. It's a miracle!
