I watched this one recently, as I am starting another rewatch. Funny article, but handwashing and social distancing wouldn't have helped with an airborne pathogen spreading through the replicators.

Well, I agree, they are not very effective in practicing social distancing. And you would at least expect the doctor to wear something. But perhaps he is using some invisible skin-tight version of the "quarantine field" TNG talks about?

Social distancing wouldn't have ultimately mattered in this case. ALL breathable air is filtered and refiltered throughout the station.

Plus, the disease came from the food they were consuming, not because of germs from sneezing, coughing, etc. So washing hands wasn't even a factor. It's only due to so many eating the infected food that it spread to so many people and then becoming airborne.

But Quark WAS to blame for the situation getting out of hand. Had he not prepared all those orders from the infected command level replicators, it might have been contained better, and a cure found likely without the loss of that freighter or people nearly dying.

(Although, less drama for our entertainment. )

I'm sure they filter out the bacteria and viruses in the air while they recirculate it. Otherwise the station would be like one big 21st century airliner, in which everybody always gets everybody's cold who just came in from a transport...
