This is what amazes me about some Sci-Fi fans: no imaginations at all. They almost seem afraid to use it.
Is it so difficult to imagine the Romulans had a control room inside the mining platform?
Did we really need to see it? Should Abrams have included a scene where one Romulan sits in the control room and explains to the other how the controls work?
If you don't have the imagination necessary to fill in the easy blanks, then you should consider only watching Soap Operas and sitcoms: the former love to explain everything, and the latter has a laugh track.
