Based on what I've heard over the years, I assume the planet killer model and the AMT model of the Constellation from this episode were both chucked after they were filmed.... and no pictures or records of their creation or filming was saved... am I wrong on this?

Yes I think it is true unfortunately. I have often fantasized of dumpster diving at Desilu while Trek was being filmed. There may be some pictures taken by one of the crew kicking around somewhere, or more Lincoln Enterprises bits of film as yet undiscovered. Hope so

I imagine that the planet killer and AMT Constellation were both kept in a crate until the series was canceled, and then one of the fx guys took them home for his kids to play with.

Then, by the time it became clear that ST was becoming immortal in syndication, those "toys" were long gone, having been broken and put out with the egg shells and empty milk carton months ago.

It could also be that they were treasured and carefully stored away until somebody's mother got rid of them, the way my mother got rid of all my baseball cards.

I could see someone tossing out both the Planet Killer and Constellation models once the episode was in the can, since both had been "destroyed" onscreen anyway, and were never going to be used again. I'm sure that no one involved at the time ever imagined that these things would become the holy relics that they are now.

Actually I have thrown out a ton of art, models, and all kinds of things I made over the years. As far as the Romulan ship goes, I heard it was destroyed in a fire or that Wah Chang's family has it. What a find that would be!

I assume the man kneeling or praying is adjusting the position of the Enterprise for the camera on the dolly track getting ready for a pass.

It's very interesting how he felt about it. He was certainly NOT conceited about it.

This a video I edited together from some youtube footage.
My version focuses on the William Windom clips. One of the fascinating things about this is seeing the Decker scene played out WITHOUT the music in the background.
