For me these are the main two reasons for Beyond underperforming. Disappointment from STID that carried over and very bad marketing. I have not seen/heard any other probable reason.
Other point: many friends of mine, who are no-trekkers, were disappointed because there were not Klingons in Beyond. "I'm disappointed. I was looking for Klingons kick-ass", said a friend.
Klingons in STID Caused a good impression. A Federation - Klingon War would not be bad, in my opinion.

Well, putting aside my take on it and that of people I've spoken to, the U.K.s best known film critic Mark Kermode compared it unfavourably with the last two.

Thinking back, I was actually considering not to go see this movie in a theatre. I don't like the first two Kelvin-timeline movies, and the marketing for this one also looked like over-the-top action overshadowing any depth the story might have. Ultimately, of course, I went to see it, to chance it, being prepared to dislike it as I've disliked the previous two movies. I'm sure glad I went, as this was one of the best Trek movies for me.

But, I gotta wonder, how many fans there were like me considering whether to see this one or not, and choosing differently. So, yeah, I can see both the dislike of the previous two movies for that not-too-small part of the fandom being a factor against seeing this one, and I also gotta say, the marketing did not help.

The purpose of an announcment is two fold: demonstrate to investors that financing a film project was a wise investment and convince film goers into seeing the film (our film is so great, we are having a sequel). Which would you be more willing to do for a film in a franchise: see a film with an announced sequel or see a film with no accouncement of a sequel? The studios are banking on the average moviegoer being the former. It's psychological manipulation.

Nope.

Chuckle.

Here we go again... so official press releases are just talk?

Here are some movies I can think of where sequels were formally announced and then cancelled after poor box office:

Superman Returns
Golden Compass
Terminator: Salvation
Green Lantern
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
City of Bones
The Amazing Spider-man 2
Terminator: Genisys
Fantastic Four

I'm not saying that ST4 won't happen but there is certainly a long history in Hollywood of cancelled previously announced sequels.

I liked Terminator: Salvation & The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and wish those sequels actually happened. But, yes, good list.

Good list! Some more of the top of my head:

Wanted 2
John Carter 2
Ender's Game 2
The Sorcerer's Apprentice 2
Jumper 2
I am Number Four 2
The Spiderwick Chronicles 2
Shooter 2
I Robot 2
I am Legend 2
Hancock 2
Lemony Snicket’s Series of Unfortunate Events 2
Eragon 2
Tron 3
Percy Jackson 3
Narnia 4
Divergent 4: Ascendant

And that's just the recent years without including movies in decades of production hell like Top Gun 2, or Beverly Hills Cop 4, or Lethal Weapon 5, etc.

Tron 3 was one I was really looking forward to. IIRC, it was cancelled weeks from filming.

How could I Am Legend 2 have worked? The lead character died. I, Robot 2? Wanted 2? We're they ever formally announced??

Planet of the Apes 2 (Burton)
Predators 2
Escape From Earth
Total Recall 2 (at one point Frakes was in line to direct. no doubt before Thurderbirds)
Star Trek XI (Nemesis sequel/crossover movie - not 'The Beginning' trilogy)

I'll ALWAYS go and see a Trek movie, and I was the opposite to you - with Pegg writing it I was actually more interested than I was before - I thought he'd make a difference.

He didn't, not at all.

Everyone knew that TR3N, as they were calling it, was dead in the water but it took Disney years to finally pull the plug.

Prequel. They even wanted to make Gladiator 2 at some point! And no, not as a prequel!!!

I, Robot 2? Wanted 2? We're they ever formally announced??

Yes and oh YES! Many times, even before Wanted was released. There was even talk of Angelina Jolie returning
even though her character had died!

There have been many articles over the past few days on the future of Paramount and its relationship to the parent company Viacom. Whatever is resolved, will have an effect on the future of the Star Trek film franchise.

There is an article at the Wall Street Journal about the relationship between Paramount and Viacom. Mr. Grey is the Chief Executive of Paramount Pictures. The paper is calling Star Trek Beyond a disappointment for it is grossing less than the past two movies.

Now Paramount Pictures parent Viacom Inc. is getting ready to crack the whip on Mr. Grey. In a Securities and Exchange Commission filing this week outlining its corporate restructuring, Viacom said new interim CEO Tom Dooley and the board will call on the Paramount team to defend their film record and present a turnaround plan.

Other films from Paramount that have not done well: Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, Zoolander 2, and Florence Foster Jenkins.

Disappointment from a film which was better reviewed by critics and users alike than Beyond, and far more successful?

In Australia it was well marketed - early TV ads, world premiere, tour by four cast members on popular shows - yet its performance is well down.

I certainly don't think it helps that most reviews of it which I have seen are worse than Into Darkness and/or emphasise how different it is to the last two.

I would've hated a Federation/Klingon war story. Why? Because Earth is pretty much the closest Federation planet to the Klingon Neutral Zone, so we'd have to deal with Earth being under threat AGAIN. Get the Enterprise as far from Earth as possible!
Lemony Snicket’s Series of Unfortunate Events 2
Eragon 2
Narnia 4
It's unfortunate that the Series of Unfortunate Events movies didn't take off. Narnia WILL continue, just under a new studio.

And Eragon changed the nature of the ending so much that the sequel movie would've diverged from the books even more, so thank sweet merciful God that the movie bombed.

Beyond is the only one of Paramount's movies in 2016 to pass $100 million in domestic box office revenue. The company is in trouble not MGM trouble yet but they need to really look at the way they make and market movies going forward.

Beyond is a disappointment there no denying that part of the blame rests with Paramount (e.g. marketing campaign, choice of release date, rough pre-production) and others were out of their control (e.g. general audience apathy towards sequels and reboots this summer, box office down across the board).

Toughing upon Beyond's release date I think if the movie had come out earlier in the summer it might have done better for two reasons: 1) Movies released in May and June do better financially than movies released in July and August 2) This summer has been so full of critical duds that by the time Beyond came out I think a lot of people had given up on the idea of a good summer blockbuster coming out this year.

The Star Trek movie franchise is not dead but there is some reason to question if there will be another Kelvin Trek or if the movie franchise will rest for on number of years and come back in some other form down the road.

Try remaking something like The Black Hole instead, something that had potential but had a botched execution the first time round.
A Black Hole remake was in the works with the Tron/Oblivion guy directing and written by the Prometheus guy. Think there was increased talk of it just after Interstellar but now seems to be dead? was looking forward to it

And deservedly so. It's Exhibit A for the case of not remaking a movie that doesn't need a remake.

"Exodus: Gods and Kings" too was one of those unnecessary remakes of a film with Heston in the leading role. Everything in this movie was done better in "The Ten Commandment" from the 50s.
They may have the technology now, but they lack the talent.
