Beyond will likely drop out of the top 10 according to the latest estimates. and will come in with about $3.5 million at the box office.

STB opening day in France is ahead of ST09 but about 18% behind STID.

Keep in mind that in Australia and the UK not only was STB behind STID but also behind ST09 as well. So hopefully this holds through the weekend.

Stupid question, but how is box office actually determined? Does Paramount collect a percentage of ticket sales, or a fixed dollar amount per ticket? I was wondering if Paramount received a lower dollar amount from matinee ticket sales. It just crossed my mind the last time I went to see it, since it was a matinee.

When all is said and done they will receive about 50-55% of the domestic box office earnings. For overseas it varies per country. 30-40% is a good rule of thumb except for China which is 25%.

So whether it is a premium IMAX screening or the dollar theater it is basically half of what the ticket price is.

I agree with most of the OP's points, especially about the poor marketing.

I think it should be mentioned that this is (for the most part) a terrible film. It's essentially Fast and Furious in space. The moments with The Beastie Boys + Public Enemy music were cringe inducing. And don't get me started on Kirk popping wheelies...If one chooses to look at this film objectively they must admit those scenes were truly embarrassing.

Totally disagree.

If we get a fourth movie in the reboot series, I foresee a few possibilities:
1. Reduced budget, keeping all cast members
2. Significantly reduced budget, with most of the cast in cameo roles (this would work well with their time travel-Hemsworth idea I would think)
3. The most radical option, a version of TNG in the Kelvin Timeline
4. A full on reboot, after the franchise has been put on hold for a few years

What do you all think?

Actually, I loved the callback to the 2009 movie with the use of "Sabotage." And I don't even like that genre of music. However, as a plot device and a character moment, it works like gangbusters.

And don't get me started on Kirk popping wheelies...

He rode a motorcycle very fast and made a jump. How is this at all out of character for the Kirk who was introduced in the 2009 film? The guy had a bike in the first film. And considering Shatner rode motorcycles and rides horses, I could absolutely see him doing this same scene if he was shooting the original series today on a larger budget.

If one chooses to look at this film objectively they must admit those scenes were truly embarrassing.

:rommie: Oh, must I? Those are your subjective viewpoints, not undisputed facts. You didn't like the film. No sweat. But, I did. And, I'm happy to say, so did a lot of others. It just didn't reach the audience hoped for.

Totally disagree.
When I see statements like that I wonder if they watched the same movie as me, I have watched the Fast and Furious films and its nothing like it in terms of story telling... This isnt the best movie in the world but its got the best character moments of any Star Trek film in while and really felt like a big screen Star Trek episode (in a good way unlike how people complain about Insurrection)

Exactly. I've never seen "The Fast and the Furious" franchise, and I hate mindless action sequences in recent blockbusters (the arrows in "The Two Towers", Bond chase scenes, Superman tossing skyscrapers in "Man of Steel", so much in "Batman vs Superman", SPFX overload in "Star Wars" Episodes 2 & 3). I had some concerns about whether I would like Lin's direction, but "Beyond" was fun, and Yorktown and the motorbike scenes were cleverly realised!

(But then, I also like JJ's two previous films.)

I agree that the film has a handful of really nice character moments, but they are hard to find among the seemingly endless and nearly incoherent action scenes...The film also has a weak villain whose motivations unclear at best.

I seem to be in the vast minority on this board, but Beyond is one of my least favorite Star Trek films.

The film also has a weak villain whose motivations unclear at best.

He's a bad guy, he does bad things, good guys must stop him. (Yes, I'm big time simplifying, but that's really the most important part)

This (more recent, relatively speaking) trend of needing to understand how a psycho thinks always baffled me. Even though this isn't the case, sometimes someone is just wired differently. Adding more to a villain doesn't make them more interesting, once they cross certain lines, the motivation doesn't matter, being stopped does.

Or am I wrong and do people watch 2001: A Space Odyssey and say Hal's motivations aren't clear enough, it's a weak film? Or the probe from Trek IV. Or the backstories of all the enemy soldiers in Saving Private Ryan?

I care about the crew. Kirk, Spock, McCoy. The focus should be on them and the journey they're taking, not the incidental evil character that's meant to drive their arc from point a to b.

Krall was originally a MACO soldier, given command of a starship when the MACOs were dissolved. When he crashed on Altimid, he felt forgotten by the government and people he risked his life multiple times to save in the Xindi and Romulan wars. He found the machinery to prolong his life and over time went batshit crazy plotting the downfall of the very organization that made him obsolete: the Federation.

Seems clear enough to me. The only thing is they saved the exposition for the end, but dropped a ton of clues along the way. It takes more than one viewing to appreciate them all. It's actually a very well constructed story.

However, like Nero in ST09, he is merely a tool in the story to give our characters their motivation to grow. He may not be the strongest or most memorable villain, but he served his purpose and his plan was certainly clear enough to me.

There have been so many great films released recently with lower budgets, that this may not be a bad thing. As long as they make up for it with a good story and character development, I'm all for it.

Well Beyond continues to remain Paramount's best performing movie of 2016 thus far. Ben Hur which was released on Friday is officially a bomb expecting to make about 12 million on its opening weekend on its $100 million budget.

This is a very scary year for paramount. The funniest thing is that their "fall" began when our little friends at disney bought Marvel and kinda snatched those movies from them, and then star wars came along.

Paramount has been having rough years. In 2015 they reported revenue was down nearly $3billion from 2014.

Paramount's current troubles are probably the real reason why we'll see Trek 4. All they have no are Transformers and Star Trek when it comes to their big tent pole franchises.

Wow, only 146mil domestically as of the 21st, now one full month after opening.

Sucks for such a great flick- it pains me to see it do so poorly. I just hope the foreign receipts start kickin' major butt soon.
