News The Disney+ (The New Streaming Service) Thread

Yeah, I haven't read the books yet, but I do know enough to be a little confused when I read an article with a quote from Kenneth Branagh talking about how they made Artemis more heroic right from the start. I knew enough to know that that seems to kind of go against the whole point of the character.

Just watched it. It’s a very confusing film that rushes everything. That fairy joined his side very quickly.

The first book is one of the few I actively chose to stop reading. I hated the characters so much. Bleah.

This is definitely one case where I share the majority opinion on the film (at least the majority opinion of people who have read and enjoyed the books like I did). It seems like people who don't know the books consider it a tolerable kids film, but if you know anything about the books its actually almost impressive how much it screws around and misses the point of both the first book and the AF series in general.
That's the vibe I am getting too. Too bad, especially for a film that was stuck in limbo for almost 20 years.

The Disney+ Hamilton trailer dropped today and it is glorious. The key change in the background music as the medley transitions to “Satisfied” is goosepimply. Can’t wait for a July 3rd.

Perfect timing for this show considering the the social issues we’re facing right now.

So that’s what Hamilton is. I assumed it was about Formula 1.
I am turning into the grumpy old man, but I do not get the frenzy this production caused. I have been to 50ish shows in the West End over the years........enjoyed most. These kids today.

These last few days I've been having a massive binge on the MCU, not really watching in any order, just whichever one takes my fancy at any given time, and it suddenly struck me that they haven't included Hulk. Got me wondering just why that might be, it's not like they've not recast any other roles (granted not the title character, but still).

Maybe it has to do with it being produced by Universal rather than a Disney MCU film.

At long last, I can finally watch that production!
Me too. I listened to about half of the soundtrack back about a year ago on my way to work, but I didn't think there was any chance I'd ever actually get to see the show. Now I can!
Just as an FYI, there are a couple of uses of fuck that are being censored to keep it at a PG-13 rating. They can only say fuck once in a PG-13 movie, so they had to get rid of 2 out of the three times it's used to keep from getting an R rating. The songs and music and everything will be there, it's just that one use of the word will be muted and the other will be covered up by a record scratch.

Fuckin' Disney!

The whole puritan Disney thing does grate sometimes, like adding hair to Daryl Hannah's butt and stuff. It's weird with the whole PG-13 deal, it's streaming, you don't really have to follow the MPAA rules.

I think it'd be nice if it had been offered as an alternate audio option. Has any streaming platform ever done that? Offered two different versions, that is, seems like it would be an easy way to please everyone. They could lock the alternate version behind an age wall so kids and families could block it out entirely if they didn't want to be exposed to such material.

Disney's public image is almost entirely based around being a family entertainment company so I can see why they are doing this stuff.
I'm still a little confused by why they didn't just put Splash on Hulu, I never really thought of it as a kids movie. Daryl Hannah spends way to much time topless for it to be a kids movie, at least here in the US.

Splash was fine for what 25, 30 years? Though I guess Splash was a Touchstone Pictures film so it wouldn't necessarily be classed as a Disney family movie

The thing with Hamilton is if I'm interpreting what Miranda is saying that there's three fucks in Hamilton and that D+ is cutting two for a PG-13 it sounds to me like they're leaving one in which seems an odd stand to make if we're going with the family image thing.

Like why not cut all three? It just seems arbitrary. I'm OK with little Jimmy hearing it once, but two times, oh Lordy I'm cancelling right now! If you're going to leave one, it seems like given the seeming cultural significance of Hamilton you could leave the others. I understand the one "F" thing has always been arbitrary but I don't see why D+ feels they need to submit as much as possible in securing a PG-13.

Splash is PG but they still felt the need to obscure the butt but they're going to let Hamilton have one f-bomb to secure a rating that isn't even necessary? Are they selling it VOD or something as well? I don't get the double standard. I assume they must be or else why even pay to have the MPAA rate it? (even if it's chicken feed for Disney)

I haven't watched it on D+, but the best part of the Splash thing is that from what I read online, they left her breasts visible in a few scenes. Maybe I'm mistaken, but I'd always assumed breasts were considered a lot worse that butts. I know I've seen butts in animated kids movies, and on cable channels, but breasts are always kept covered.

This “family only” policy is annoying. Especially in the UK where we don’t have Hulu to put their better stuff on. Sure they could go on Netflix and Prime but so far only a few have done so.
Their rating system here is a bit weird with them rating the Simpsons 6+ which I know isn’t true as the majority of them are a 12 in the UK.
