well for once the federation takes kind of a back seat to being part of history. its about the romulans and carddians for once who well mark the coruse of history for the glaxiy now granted not much happens after that but still it was an episode that showed its not just about the federation other super powers can be be the catlyist for something big in history.

The Federation did not take a back seat. They weren't about to commit genocide. Plus, changelings were able to intrafrilate the Tal'Shair and the Obsidian Order since they weren't exactly a secret organization. People knew about them. Section 31 is a different story. They are not exactly known, and there seem to be a lack of structure. It would be tough for a changeling to bring Starfleet into it.

And this incident was definitely not the catalyst that led to the Dominion War. It was the New Bajor Colony and certain activities that took place in the Gamma Quadrant that got the Dominion to react.

my point is that it was not about the federation the only real reason they got involved was because of odo and mabye gark but other then that reason the fedeartion would not have been invovled in this episode.

Yeah, so? neither were the Klingons, Tholians, Talarians, Ferengi, Gorn or the Breen. Klingons don't exactly use strategy. Ferengi are wimps. Talarians are weaker. The Changelings found Cardasianns and Romulans ripe for fleet thinning. That was the point of the whole thing. The Dominion wanted to lure fleets that would cause the most threat to them. Starfleet was the only one left that would pose a threat.

yeah but for the most part the show is about the federation making big desisions that could change the coruse of history for the quarent and stuff in this episode it was something other then the federation.

Yeah, I think I remember Kira or Sisko talking about all the ships that had been lost in the Gamma quadrant after the wormhole was discovered. The Dominion was pissed long before the events of "The Die is Cast".

Great episode the rommies and cardys get there ass kicked love the scene when the romulan and cardy fleets open fire on the founders home world and relise they've been tricked priceless story telling !!!!

Yea while I liked the concept of the trap and the compliment the Dominion paid the Tal Shiar and Obsidian Order by taking advantage of Colonel Lovoks/Tains plan-because the Dominion recognised how powerful these intelligence agencies were.

The 20 seconds of footage of the jem hadar attack left me wanting a longer sequence showing the Tal Shiar/Cradassian ships firing back.

THe ass kicking looked more like it was a budget/fx issue

Those 20 old vessels were manned by combat vets as stated -and thy did nothing-I expected some cloaking at least.

It was good that the episode focused on other Alpha Quadrant powers besides the Federation, which is what I think the OP is saying.

It showed that there were other players on the stage besides our usual Starfleet people.

These Founders, Elim, they're good... Next time, we should be more careful!

I agree with the OP. This really did not focus on the Federation very much, and it did involve other races and their governments more. This is why I would have loved to see a show based solely on Cardassia or Romulus. It could be amazing!

I agree! When DS9 ended, there was some discussion here about what the next show would be about. My idea was for a show centered on a Federation Embassy set on Cardassia Prime right after the Dominion War. Staffed mostly by Federation civilians, with only 2 to 3 Starfleet officers providing security and medical aid, the embassy's role was to improve relations with a war torn Cardassia.

Even without the overarching plot bits (Obsidian Order/Tal Shiar go off to hit the Founders), I love this episode purely on the basis of the interplay between Odo/Garak and Garak/Tain. Brilliant stuff.

It was such a complex and well written (and acted) episode. That said, it's not my favourite. Perhaps Far Beyond the Stars or In the Pale Moonlight are.
