The Destruction of Romulus!?

Again, Romulus is still around in the movie timeline, and Vulcan is still around in the old timeline. And we could very well have both in some hypothetical new TV timeline.

One way or another, it will get sorted out.

Or, it could not be mentioned and they'll rely on fiction authors to give us the details. Right? :techman:

Also, as much as I think Romulans and Vulcans are enjoyable aliens, they are not necessary for a new series, at all. If they were, then GR would not have considered abandoning most previously established alien races in designing TNG.

TNG managed to "reboot" the franchise without destroying Mr. Spock's homeworld. And with a brand new cast of characters too. That took balls.

But it was a move that many diehard TOS fans hated intensely. You seem to forget that TNG failed to win over a lot of people, some only begrudgingly accepting the show in Season Three. Some TOS fans proudly blackbanned it.

Every new Trek has its detractors. And newbie fans, some of whom do their research and catch up on everything that has come before.

My dad grew up with TOS and has never seen a TNG episode or film, much less anything else from DS9, VOY or ENT. He had a blast Abrams Trek, though. I know of others similar to him as well.

It might sound odd, but one of the reasons why I like Abrams Trek is the idea of possibilities. We know Kirk and Spock in one way, but what would cause them to change or different possibilities in their life. The Mirror Universe is a classic example of this, and I think Abrams did it in an interesting way as well.

This scene from the Mirror Universe comic illustrates this rather well :)

I'm down with a third, new universe being established for the upcoming series IF:

...it's created by the obliteration of the entire 24th century Alpha Quadrant.

I'm just so tired of reboots and "reimaginings." There's a whole universe of stories that you can tell while still being Star Trek at heart.

Everybody says that. No one tells them. No one can describe them in an interesting way. Fan films certainly don't.

But you also don't necessarily need all the old continuity to capture the spirit of STAR TREK.

You know what? I changed my mind.

I will pay whatever CBS wants to charge me, if they get Cumberbatch back for the new series and make him play Fabio-haired, has taken a vow against violence Khan.

Vulcan is still around in that universe too, so everyone would be happy!

I have watched all Star Trek that is convenient to watch and doesn't scream non-cannon that got passed CBS.
I expect writers to know the difference between 'passed' and 'past.' You're fired.

As I am totally discounting everything that occurred in Abrams movies...
However, I like this attitude. They, or maybe you, should do the same with anything past "Aliens" in that franchise.

As it happens, I delivered a revised draft of a new TREK novel to my editor last night.

Coincidence. . . ? :)
How the hell do you read and post here so much and still do effective work... writing? Are you some kind of Asimov? Where I come from, it's called Fatal Distraction.

This!

I think that reboots/reimaginings are a clear sign of creative bankruptcy. Rebooting a franchise every few years as it just happened with Spider Man and Fantastic Four is so incredibly lame that I wonder how they are getting away with it.

Star Trek has such a rich background that you could tell all kinds of stories. Once you make it a character driven show and minimize the techno-babble, it shouldn't be too hard to get canon and continuity straight. Unless you are a lazy and/or ignorant writer, that is.

If they want to start it all over again and throw continuity/canon over board, then why bother calling it Star Trek in the first place? I know ... $$$ ...

Because you want to do Star Trek and make it accessible to folks who don't care about 700 hours of back story.

Getting the broad strokes right is important, the minutiae is not.
