The Destiny Trilogy Would Make A Good Movie(s)

Dayton3

The books are far from being my cup of tea, but I think they have the potential to be a good Star Trek movie. Or two or three of them perhaps.

There are a number of things that would have to be taken out to trim the story down and keep the movies focused.

The Jean Luc/Beverly and Deanna/Will baby stories would probably have to be flushed.

Lots of the stuff with the Columbia and its crew probably wouldn't be usable on a movie screen.

And the entire origin of the Borg and Caeliar stuff would probably have to be eliminated.

And the battle sequences punched up. Especially the one at the end of the second book.

But otherwise I think it would be worth paying 20 dollars (see it twice) to see.

After all the stuff you wanted cut was cut... we'd have stock footage from Wolf 359 and First Contact... its just a bunch of ships shooting half effectually at Borg Cubes...

Except the end of MM- that fight was cool, but I'm not sure its an entire movie or two.

I'll never understand why they didn't go the TV movie or straight to DVD route. It is too late now though, too many of the main characters from TNG/DS9/VOY have aged, gotten badly out of shape, etc.. I don't mean that as a knock, it just happens. Or they have just plain moved on in their lives or careers and wouldn't be interested in something like that.

A condensed form of Destiny would have made a good movie though, yeah.

Oh my god, something positive from Dayton3! Even though this proposal, just like the Vendetta proposal, sucks all the characterization out and turns it into a BIG BATTLE MOVIE.

Seriously, though, from what I understand, they are rather epic novels. But pretty much anything "epic" would make a good movie, from Spock's World to The Buried Age to Vendetta to Destiny, just so long as there is a good balance between characters and action.

The baby stuff would probably need to go, sure. But if you eliminate the Borg origin story, then you eliminate the heart and soul of the novel. Destiny isn't about the Borg invading the Federation -- it's about how different people cope with imminent death. It's important to show how the Borg originated from someone who refused to accept death and chose to violate other peoples' rights rather than die in order to contrast it with the Federation's response to its own imminent extermination.

^Perhaps you are right.

But for the life of me I don't see how they could bring that out on the big screen.

And I don't have a clue as to how you could even come close to depicting Captain Hernandez's centuries long stay among the Caeliar.

And those "lost centuries" of hers are pretty vital in leading to the resolution of the story.

That's a good and succinct observation there Sci and I would have to agree with it.

As you said, Dayton3, the Destiny trilogy would make good movies, as in more than one. The trilogy could easily be condensed into three movies without losing much storyline. Some things, like the babies, would have to go if it were made into two movies. However, I don't see how it could be a single movie unless it includes an intermission.

Actually it would have probably made a better mini-series than a movie. Like the way V was done. I agree, there is just too much material there to do as one movie, even condensed.

I think the only problem depicting Hernandez stranded in the past with the Caeliar would be showing her rejuvenated to a young woman. I don't think that's too major a plot point however and just taking off all the aging makeup used on her to simulate old age would be good enough.

It could easily enough be made into a relatively big-budget TV miniseries or movie trilogy without losing any of the storyline. There is just too much for a single movie no matter how you cut it.

But not enough material for three movies for sure. I love the series and I think that it would be fun to see it come to the screen in some form but it will never happen unfortunately. Thankfully we have the books! :)

^ Yeah and given the bad track record most of the TNG movies have I would prefer that Destiny not be messed up as a movie.

I dunno about that. David Mack is a trained script-writer, after all!

^ Hey, if David Mack wrote a screenplay for Destiny or for any movie/TV Trek related thing I would be onboard in a second!!

I wonder if Mr. Mack might come in and speculate about how he would alter the story if they were adapted for a mini series or series of movies.

In regards to things like story length, budget, et cetera.
