There are a lot of people who are mentally ill to the degree they're dangerous to others. We don't kill them. We lock them up and try to cure them. The idea of putting Lore on trial , to be punished for his actions is, in essence, as unjust as would be doing so with someone who is mentally incompetent. Lore is unfit to stand trial. He is by design not capable of emotional stability, & thereby not competent.
Because Lore was a person and as a such should have some rights.Data knew this, & knew the only solution was to deactivate him. Data has also always considered himself to be the sole bearer of the Soong family legacy. He refuses to allow Maddox to tamper with him. He considers Lal is sole responsibility. The choice of how to handle Julianna was his alone. Why should the issue of Lore be any different?
Ya when we first get introduced to Lore his main character difference is the fact that he has ambition, which is necessarily an emotional characteristic. Ambition on its own, with out sympathy and empathy is what makes him selfishI never thought there was any malfunction in Lore, & I can't really call him an evil person either. He is functioning exactly how he was meant to.
He shows immediate denial & remorse, when learning Soong is dying, & expresses genuine regret
I dont know about this, morally ya, but technically, as has been discussed in other threads, the verdict in 'measure of a man' only gave Data the right to choose. Also I'm of the opinion that because Data, Lore, Lal and the Juliana were androids, they were kind of there own race. A race that weren't actually members of the federation so they weren't really beholden to federation laws, Data was as a member of Starfleet, but if he left Starfleet (like he threatened in 'Measure of a Man') he wouldn't have had to live by federation laws. the federation therefor had no say in what happened to Android's. but thats just how I saw itBecause Lore was a person and as a such should have some rights
Your right, after seeing responses like this I realised I misread the plot to suit my own opions, personaly I think the federation have no business interfering in android matters, but forsure if the federation thought of the androids as a race they would hold members of that race accountable from crimes against the federation. This idea that Starfleet can't give Lore a trial because he's in a 'Civilization of two' is absurd.
I think the reason Lore didn't get a trial is that Measure of A Man was actually a one time exception made for Data
