The Defenders--Marvel/Netflix

Well, with the news that Marvel and Netflix's The Defenders will start filming in August, and the announcement that Daredevil S2 show-runners Doug Petrie and Marco Ramirez will be helming the show, the time has come for the show to have it's own thread.

Starring Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock/Daredevil, Kristen Ritter as Jessica Jones, Mike Coulter as Luke Cage, Finn Jones as Danny Rand/Iron Fist, and (presumably) Rosario Dawson as Claire Temple, The Defenders will be an 8-part "event" mini-series that brings together all of the stars of the Marvel/Netflix shows set in the MCU. According to Charlie Cox, it will be Daredevil that, uhm, assembles the team.

I know that there are some who would prefer a classic Defenders line-up (lookin' at you, @kirk55555 ), but the fact that Dr. Strange and the Hulk are Movie-level characters and with the rights issues inherent with Namor and Silver Surfer, it is sadly, at this point in time, a practical impossibility.

When I first saw The Avengers, one of the things that impressed me was how effortlessly it worked as a sequel to four different movies, and I look forward to something similar here. The final episode of DD S2 set up some potential interaction between the show's supporting casts by placing Foggy Nelson at Jeryn Hogarth's legal firm. Would like to see Malcom? Karen? (Can they leave us hanging for two years with Karen after the bombshell Matt dropped on her?)

So, what are your hopes and expectations for The Defenders? Would you like to see The Punisher or maybe even Hellcat join the team? Should they introduce new heroes (Moon Knight!)? Should it pick up dangling threads from it's parent shows (The Hand, IGH) or be entirely it's own thing with a new story/threat?

Let the discussion begin!

"Fish Man and Shiny Man not team with Magician and Hulk? Hulk SMASH Fish Man and Shiny Man!!!"

It should stand on its own. Present and future viewers shouldn't have to know to watch one season of this and two seasons of that before switching over to The Defenders. And I wouldn't mind seeing Jessica's friend become Hellcat but maybe that should wait until Jessica Jones season 2.

The way these five shows have unfolded is kinda similar to how the MCU's Phase One played out, now that I think about it. Two movies for Iron Man, one movie each for Hulk, Thor, and Captain America, and then a team-up; two seasons for Daredevil, one season each for Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist, and then a team-up.

I'm sure it's entirely coincidental but I find it interesting.

If this was in the comics, I'd enjoy the hell out of a Daredevil/Jessica Jones/Luke Cage/Iron Fist Defenders, even without the core characters. The Fearless Defenders, for example, was a great comic book that didn't include any of the "founding" Defenders. As it is, I hate Netflix's Jessica Jones (both the character and the show), Daredevil has become garbage, and Luke Cage didn't really impress me in his appearances on JJ (although he was easily the best good guy character in Jessica Jones). So, yeah, I wish the original comic Defenders were the MCU Defenders, but I didn't even remotely expect it, even before the Defenders show was announced. I'll probably watch at least a few episodes of Defenders whenever it comes out, especially if I end up liking Luke Cage or Iron Fist's shows.

I wish the shows had done more before getting to The Defenders.

I'd rather the show be Heroes for Hire than The Defenders.
I actually rather hope that the Luke Cage and Iron Fist shows combine to become a single Heroes for Hire show after their first seasons and Defenders. If nothing else, it would open a slot for new seasons of DD or JJ or even some altogether new project. A few weeks ago I would have said "Cloak and Dagger"...

I'd settle for Nighthawk, Valkyrie and Hellcat.

This is kind of what I'm hoping for, too. I think Blade would do really well on Netflix. Maybe his show could eventually develop into a Nightstalkers show (except done properly this time). Bonus points if they could get Benedict Cumberbatch to cameo as Doctor Strange, who brought the Nightstalkers together in the comics.

Using the comparison logic, then a character from Daredevil Season 2 (in its comparison to IM2 and Black Widow's introduction) and a character from Luke Cage (in its running position as the Thor and having the Hawkeye cameo) will also pop up on the Defenders team (Punisher and Misty Knight, perhaps?).

Yeah that's what the Punisher will probably be, a S2 character who becomes main Defender. Bernthal was just too good, especially if (perhaps hopefully) the Kingpin is the villain & they also now have the history ...

The same logic would indicate the villain will debut in Luke Cage, but feature a major element from Iron Fist ;p

I would like to see them find a way to tie the different shows together, but right now I'm not sure how that is going to work. The Phase One movies were all tied together by S.H.I.E.L.D and the Avengers Intiative, but so far there has been no real obvious connection like that up to DD Season 2 Episode 8, and JJ Episode 12 (that's as far as I've gotten so far).

The last episode of Jessica Jones season 1 will have a connection to Daredevil, and the last episode of Daredevil season 2 will have a connection to Jessica Jones.

ETA: Matt and Foggy's cop friend, Brett Mahoney, was in Jessica Jones as well, in the scene where Killgrave takes over the police station. In Daredevil season 2, Brett name drops Detective Clemmons from JJ.
