The Defenders--Marvel/Netflix

It's looking more and more likely that the first threat will be The Hand.

I agree--it comes off like the "anyone else we can find" line up, instead of the traditional 1st Defenders group.

I think it's more like the "street-level New York heroes" lineup. For TV, they wanted characters where the focus could be more on drama and small-scale action with limited or no superpowers than on huge, ultra-expensive CGI epics, and these are the characters that they considered to be the best fits for that, as well as a group of characters who mostly had some existing interconnections in the comics (i.e. Luke is connected to both Danny and Jessica, though Matt's the odd one out there). So that was the team they settled on, for logical reasons. I would assume that the name for the team-up miniseries came later, and that they went with Defenders because it sounded kinda like Avengers, because it was an obscure name without a lot of baggage in the public's mind, and because it represented the "protect the neighborhood" attitude they're going for.

I wouldn't be averse to the Luke Cage and Iron Fist shows merging into a single Heroes for Hire show at some point, though.

I still wish this was called Heroes for Hire but I suppose the people in charge take issue with a title that suggests heroism that isn't altruistic, hence Defenders. I'll watch it of course.

I would guess more straightforwardly the fact that three out of four of them aren't actually for hire is the issue with that name?

I think the issue is that Marvel wanted a name that sounded like The Avengers. Ninety-plus percent of their target audience doesn't read the comics and has no prior familiarity with these characters. The name Heroes for Hire would mean nothing to them. The name Defenders means nothing to them either, but it rhymes with Avengers, so it gets across the idea "This is like the Avengers movies, but for our TV characters."

Arguably all four of them are for hire, in one sense or another. The first season of Luke Cage will probably end up with Luke deciding to become a hero for hire, if it doesn't start that way (though knowing these shows, they're more likely to wait until the finale to have him adopt his classic role). Iron Fist would presumably join him in the hero-for-hire business at some point. Jessica Jones is for hire as a private investigator, which is as close to heroing as she gets (and isn't that different from Luke and Danny's business). And Matt Murdock's heroing is freelance, but he's for hire as a defense attorney.

It means something to me dammit!! ;) (yes I know it's not the same "Defenders", but my childhood memories don't give a shite.)
It seems there may be a possibility that the Punisher will also appear in the Defenders series:

I'd assumed that was already pretty much a given.

Unsurprising but good to have it confirmed. I'm sure Karen will be there, too.

It's going to be a pretty crowded show. Hopefully they'll be able to juggle all of the characters and give everyone more or less a balanced showing.

Do you have a confirmation for how many episodes the season will be? I recall early reports saying eight episodes, but I think I saw a Comic-Con related interview that suggested 13.

Could be. It does seem like this would be awfully early to begin training for JJ Season 2.
