The protagonist in a thriller such as this... It's a bit of a cliche for these sorts of stories isn't it?

Well if he believed there was some chance of saving her it might be understandable, but this is just child abandonment surely. It's a major dick move.

Not withstanding any dodgy plot elements, how does the serial fare from a technical standpoint? Given that the vessel has a "moon pool" -- unusual seeing as they can move vertically without any problem adjusting the pressure to maintain the water level even when colliding with undersea vents -- I can only presume that they're working at equivalent hydrostatic pressure. I assume a way has been found to get around the "Donald Duck" effect of a partly Helium atmosphere. I was only sort of half watching so I may have missed any techobabble hand-waving explanation. I'm not au fait with diving technology so maybe everything is ticketyboo.
Ah right, that's reasonably plausible -- the higher mass of the neon atom offsets the adiabatic index to a large extent. The fact that the moon pool appeared to have retained its integrity after they were carroming around was a bit of a stretch.
I seem to remember they did the same thing in The Abyss. The rig was being drug about all over the shop including being at a severe cant and yet once everything had settled down again the moon pool was miraculously reset. Maybe the idea is that the bulkheads are all sealed, so pumping atmosphere back into the room to restore the pool will do the trick?

I liked The Abyss a lot more 'cause the characters were more interesting -- the ending was a bit pants but I can't come up with a better one myself. Minnie Driver's acting doesn't make her believable as a commander type. I think they could have gone with lesser known actors and saved some money.
Do you ever give a tv show your full attention? I only ask because I find, even with stuff like Who that I love, that when I rewatch an episode and try and fiddle about on the laptop at the same time I don't enjoy it nearly enough.
People claim they can multitask but really the human brain can only do a maxium of 2 things at once and even then you're not doing either thing as well as you would be otherwise.
Seen part 2 now, I don't think the show is brilliant, but it's enjoyable enough and I like the direction its going in. Judging by the trailers I was expecting alien/Abyss type malarky but if it is going to eventually go there then it's at least being subtle about it.
Compared to Sherlock it's obviously poor, but compared to a lot of drek that gets made these days it's at least better than average.

Sorry I got a bit ahead of myself there Starkers! Anyway the last installment was all over the place. There were inconsistencies galore and the edge of the seat stuff was ruined by the fact we were screaming 'just let him die!' at the screen a lot. James Nesbit's character punched through annoying to another plane. I saw the twist coming a mile off. However by the time the big reveal for this episode came along, we were shouting 'just let them BOTH die'. Anyone think it was just insane that a bunch of submariners were cowed by Russians threatening them with guns? Guns? Y'know, in an enclosed thick metal container under extreme pressure?

God, this episode was a real let down compared to the first 2, and episode 2 was a let down compared to episode 1, so that does not bode well.
Nesbitt's character was annoying beyond belief, even before he saw his wife he was acting like a total moron. There's a frigging nuclear reactor about to go critical and he's looking at pictures of his wife, and for some completely incomprehensible reason ignoring fervent and urgent calls from his team, who are all sat on top on the nuclear reactor. What, too much effort just to say one word so they know he's not dead??
Terrible. At least he's found his bloody wife now, so maybe he can stop acting like such a twat.
