The Daily Show Without Jon Stewart

I'm racking my brain & can't think of anything worse to happen to broadcast television in my entire lifetime. This is worse than Carson leaving

I guess he announces it tonight, in like 50 minutes in my time zone

Larry and Oliver must be spitting their dummies.

Would they have left if they knew the big chair was going to be available 5 minutes later?

Jason and Samantha are going to destroy everyone else, and then take screwdrivers to each other.

Oliver had a small chance. If they put any of those other plebes at the helm, the whole network is doomed

It's hard to imagine the DS without Jon, though I'm sure he has valid reasons. The show has had a lot of good cast members over the years, but he's the host that fit it properly. I can remember when Craig Kilborn was there and Jon works much better in many ways.

Like the Simpsons, Daily Show has been a part of most of my life. I really hope they find someone good to replace him; all the greats already have their own shows! I'd like Aasif Mandvi.

What I'd REALLY like is John Oliver, because I don't have HBO :p

Well, Comedy Central isn't broadcast television, so...

;)

Oh, you can't even compare Stewart to Kilborn. Kilborn was all about making cheeky jokes about celebrities.

If they promote from within, I agree Aasif Mandvi is the best choice. And it'd be cool to give such a prominent entertainment job to a Muslim. But I think it's much more likely they go for some other young comic and try to strike gold again.

I can barely remember Kilborn, but he didn't really do political humor either right?

Meh. Stephen Colbert was the real loss IMO.
Yeah, what would Jon Stewart & Comedy Central have been without Colbert forging the way..... oh wait :p

Frankly, my opinion is actually that the Daily Show has steadily lost steam in its supporting cast over the years of losing Lewis Black, Carell & Colbert, etc... Stewart is all the character the show has left. He's like the bat signal of political humor

Wilmore: Probably, just because I think his "issues-based" show suits him better than The Daily Show would have.

Oliver: Maybe he wouldn't have, although I appreciate the crap his show can get away with. I'm glad that we could have both, and frankly if I could have him on his HBO show, or him on The Daily Show, I think I'd rather have Last Week Tonight.

They were both good in my opinion. And iirc Stewart helped to executive produce Stephen Colbert's show. Supporting one another was one good thing for the both of them tbh.

Both of them lampooned the political system and gave it a nice swift kick in the rear which it truly needed. :techman:

The comedy and (in a way) the news world is a lot sadder off without either of them :(.

John Oliver would have been perfect, but I'm glad he got his own show, and he's probably still happier only working once a week. (I know he has to write and everything.)

It's almost to the point they should just cancel The Daily Show because the last few seasons the new people just haven't brought it (from my very limited viewpoint.).

John Oliver is the only one I can think of at the moment who can carry the mantle with a semblance of the combination of humor, righteousness and outrage that is Jon Stewart.

I can barely remember Kilborn, but he didn't really do political humor either right?

There were these questions. He asked five of them.

The one really Kilborn element that persisted was "your moment of zen". I can't imagine it ever would've been called that under the Stewart regime.

Assuming Comedy Central is okay with the idea, there really isn't anything stopping Larry from taking over the show. It's still Comedy Central, after all, and if has a spectacular year, that's more incentive for Comedy Central to cancel Larry's show in favor of getting him the big chair.

Oliver, I wouldn't worry about him in any case. His profile shot up dramatically thanks to his HBO show, and plus, it's an HBO show. Not easy to come by. He probably gets away with more crap, but also could bring in comparable money, too. I'd wager that he's pretty comfortable where he is now.

As for Kilborn, he just struck me as a fratboy version of Joel McHale's run on the Soup, so snarky yes but much more smug and irritating about it. I'm glad he gave it up to Jon.
