The Curse of Oak Island

Kirby

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
Anyone watching this? Oak Island in Nova Scotia has been the hot spot for several centuries for treasure hunters looking for deep buried treasure from either: Pirates, The Knights Templar, the Spanish, the French, the British. You name it, someone could have buried something there.
Even FDR was involved in looking for treasure there as a young man.
I find it extremely interesting about how they go about looking for the 'Money Pit' and the history involved with the prior treasure hunters, and the original settlers on the island.

On the other hand it feels like they could be 'salting' the island with old coins and spikes and stuff to make it look like they're almost to the money pit.

I was shocked to see Shatner tweet about the show.

I followed the show for one season and found it interesting, subsequent seasons on and off, but discontinued owing to the repeated failures.

If they ever actual find their treasure it will be in the news and maybe I'll watch more resent episodes to get the full back story.

I wish the two brothers well.

I agree, it started well but became a huge bore with them finding nothing of much relevance at all, but still getting excited over it and introducing wild theorys

Yep my wife & I watch it regularly. Quite an interesting process they're going through to narrow down where they need to go. I agree it's been kind of a drag in the past couple of seasons, with the producers hyping up the "we found a NAIL!" scenes like they've discovered the ancient Templar Treasure or something. The one thing I hope for this season, though, is that I recall seeing a number of clickbait sites saying they actually found something recently - something big. No idea if these are from a targeted marketing campaign by the History Channel to further hype up the show, or if something was actually found. If they did find something of worth, of course they'll wait til the season finale to reveal it. I actually do find some of their side-bar explorations fascinating, though. The small tunnel they found on the western end of the island was cool and warranted more examination, and they did seem to discover and confirm a part of the coastal water shafts last season that delivered water to the traps farther in.

I just genuinely hope they don't go carelessly bumbling around with those drills and cut right through the Grail or Ark of the Covenant or something stupid like that. There had been reports of earlier expeditions coming up with "gold on the drill bits". As cool as that sounds, it almost guarantees that something of great historical value was either damaged or completely destroyed in the process.

Yes, I have been watching it since it's debut. As a boy, I liked Leonard Nimoy's In Search Of... documentary television series and especially their episode on this subject:

All I can think about when I watch this now is how much money they have sunk into finding this supposed treasure.... And how, if there IS a treasure, there isn't going to be much left once they pay their bills... I know they have advertising and network sponsorships and these guys are rich, but still... They must be bleeding money...

I've been watching it, but it doesn't seem like much has been gained. Some of the speculation, like the Knights Templar being involved, seems sort of hokey to me, but it is overall still interesting to watch.

Like Galileo7, I first learned about Oak Island from the 'In Search Of' segment, and was immediately hooked on the subject. Back then, very few people knew about or had heard of the Oak Island treasure; books on the subject at the time were few and far between, so finding news on the search was difficult.

The Internet changed that and in 2003 I discovered an Oak Island discussion forum and began to make the acquaintance of various folks who had connections with what was going on, including a former tour guide on the island, as well as author D'Arcy O'Connor, who served as a consultant on the 'In Search Of' episode.

From what I've been able to learn from two of my contacts in Nova Scotia, the production company filmed until late November, the longest filming period in five years, and that a LOT of heavy drilling equipment was brought out to the island. The rumor is that something of real significance was found, but whether any form of treasure was recovered is unknown at this point. My feeling is that they may have found actual proof of something valuable, but likely have not been able to bring it to the surface.

I do believe that the Laginas and their partners are probably closer to finding an answer than any previous search group, plus they have the benefit of Dan Blankenship's knowledge and experience. It is quite possible that a definitive answer may soon be found.

Well, finding bones belonging to a European individual and an individual of Middle Eastern descent was very interesting, and of course they are thinking about the Knights Templar again. The pieces of a possible bound book is also intriguing. I love a mystery!

Definitely some very cool things being found. I'm still greatly concerned, however, that with all these things they're finding, that an equal or greater amount of evidence is being damaged or destroyed in the digging process. I hope there's something left that's intact.

Yeah, finding pieces of a possible leather bound book and human bone fragments doesn't bode well for artifacts being intact if recovered. There is an archaeologist at the site, so he is probably cringing at all the destruction, but a regular dig would probably be too dangerous if at all possible.

I have to agree with both of you, I'm concerned about whatever artifacts that are in the Chappell Vault being compromised by both the drilling, not to mention what occurred in 1861 when the Vault fell further downward, presumably into one of the voids.

Also of concern is just how to dig a new shaft large enough to extract said vault, without damaging it in the process, not to mention any loose artifact that would come up in the vast amount of spoils such a dig would produce.

This is an interesting little fact which in and by itself means nothing, but it's been gnawing at me for the last several months. Randall Sullivan, who wrote the excellent article about Oak Island in the January 22, 2004 issue of Rolling Stone, visited the island again in 2016 (as shown on the show) and has written a new book that was to have been released last July. Then for unknown reasons, the publication date for the hardcover was pushed back to the beginning of the year, then later that was changed to April of 2018. The electronic version was in fact released back in July, by why not the physical book? Though I have no way to know for certain, it seems likely to me that when the Laginas and their partners began work back in the spring and began finding items of interest, Sullivan may have convinced Atlantic-Grove to hold off on publication of the hardcover, in the event that the treasure actually was found and recovered - in effect, giving Sullivan time to write the final chapter in the Oak Island story.

As I say, the fact that the book has been postponed until next year doesn't prove anything, but it is a bit odd. Then again, it's Oak Island we're talking about here.

Maybe somebody will find a 1000 year-old 'Beebo' doll from 1992 ;).

Eh, it's an interesting enough curiosity, but as it goes on and on, its just stretching things out without any real change in status.

One of those things that would have been a cool mini-series, concluding with finding or not finding the treasure, but year after year of this has sapped the interest for me.

It is getting a bit tedious, yes. Their current drilling activities do seem to be producing more interesting results, though, than in all previous seasons. I'm hoping they are now close to finally finding something. The big void next to the H-8 bore (right where the vault is supposed to be) looks to be the most promising lead they've uncovered in the history of the show.

It seems that whatever is down there wasn't meant to be dug back up. Burying something that deep with boobytraps seems like it was meant to be a permanent resting place, so to speak. So, what kind of "treasure" would be buried where it could not be retrieved?

Any number of things. They've uncovered evidence of the existence of various known pirate captains in the region, as well as the most popular theory, being that of the infamous missing Knights Templar Treasure, which may possibly include the Ark of the Covenant and/or Holy Grail.

My point was that the way the "treasure" was buried makes it next to impossible for the ones who buried it to come back and retrieve it. A pirate would want to come back and recover the goods, so why bury it so deep with precautions to flood the vault? Anything valuable would have to be water proof, in case attempts to dig it up tripped the boobytraps. Likewise the Knights Templar. If they went to all the trouble to cross the ocean, bury the whatsis over a hundred feet down a hole and set boobytraps to ensure the difficulty of retrieving whatever "it" is, it just seems that maybe they didn't intend for anyone to recover it. That makes the mystery more intriguing to me. A lot of work seems to have gone into this whole enterprise a long time ago.

Good point. Hadn't thought of it that way before. In a way it may reenforce the Templar theory. If the Ark was covered in gold, they may think it waterproof. They would also have had the resources to make a small watertight chest that could house the Grail. Looking at it from the spiritual POV that the Templars would have embraced, they may have believed that such artifacts touched by God would have supernaturally protected them from any elements.
