The curse of even Trek Films and the reboot - thought

If they had done a straight reboot, then a lot of people would have complained that they were disrespecting 50 years of canon, including 5 TV shows and 10 movies, by essentially saying that it didn't count anymore. That absolutely would have happened, and that's why they went the route that they did. It truly is a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" scenario.

Yeah, the way they did it was actually the best and most clever choice they could have made-it doesn't disrupt continuity, but it frees them to tell whatever stories they want

And I like the way it went with that. We see a certain amount of "what might have been" in this new timeline. The old timeline is there and we see what happens now when Kirk goes right instead of left.

I'm not quite seeing how a straight reboot by necessity means disrespecting fifty years of canon. The BBC's SHERLOCK is a modern reboot of the Conan Doyle stories, and I think they've managed to respect canon. Unless you're confusing "canon" with "continuity."

Sorry, continuity would be the appropriate term. The rest of my point still stands.
I think you're right it would have happened, but who cares? By doing what they did, pussy-footing around with a reboot/not-really-a-reboot they're getting flack from all sides. Better to do just what they really want to do, while still showing respect to the characters and the mythos -- especially since it's only a matter of time before a real straight reboot actually happens.
