The crazy old guy (RedLetterMedia) Vs. "Avatar"!

Flying Spaghetti Monster

Vice Admiral
Admiral
I know, this could probably be included in the thread about Avatar, but that thread is long, long, long.

The thing is, when the REdLetterMedia guy takes on a film, it's no doubt deserving of it's own thread. Here it is.

Pretty amusing :)

Not nearly as classic as his Trek Or SW reviews - but I guess righteous indignation and anger makes for a better review.

Unlike his mammoth TPM review, he didn't really say anything substantial that I didn't already know or hadn't occurred to me as a criticism; which is unsurprising I guess.

That said, amusing enough.

Plus, the film is not out on DVD yet, so he could only use a limted amount of footage released by the studio. Better to make ti short and sweet.
I thought it was reasonably effective, even if he has to resort to the same two-dozen clips from the trailers and online featurettes.

I forgot to mention this... But the D9 aliens were given large eyes for the same reason - so they could be sympathetic and express emotion better. The reasoning behind the large eyes is of course the same for both films, since the eyes are the 'window to the soul'. At least for that aspect, the same criticism applies to both films. (Even though I do not think it is a bad thing)

It's most definitely not a bad thing.

What the D9 aliens were also given is human body language. It really struck me when Christopher banged the wall in frustration; he moved just as a human would.

I'd agree with most of the reviews analysis of why things were done in Avatar and yet I'd all consider them rather apt and conscious choices for what the film sets out to do (though I'd actually give Cameron a little less credit as far as heart strings go.)

Meh. A decent review, but not terribly insightful. The psychotic old guy shtick definitely works better on bad movies. And if one doesn't like the story of Avatar, which seems to be the main (pretty valid) complaint, one isn't at all forced to see it. It's not as though it's part of (and thus being put on par with) a cultural legend such as SW or ST.

The most interesting point he made was that the uber-liberal movie may not end up donating anything to liberal causes. Going into depth there would have been different and potentially thought-provoking.

This review was okay, but it was clear he didn't put as much effort into it as his Star Trek or Star Wars reviews.

It's not easy to get the same inspiration for a scathingly funny (and funny scathing) review when it is pretty clear that he liked much of Avatar quite a bit.
