Spoilers The Controversial Star Wars Opinion Thread

Those retractable lightsabres were the worst. Once you snapped one off, as you inevitably did, you were stuffed. At least with the later versions if you lost the light sabre it was easy to replace (used to get a match stick and colour it in with felt tip pens to look like a light sabre and it worked just fine!)

Before someone says "cost of tooling, etc.", Kenner could have produced an updated ANH Luke with a normal hand and the lightsaber accessory developed for his TESB counterpart. Kenner modified R2--twice--one with sensorscope (TESB), and the other with the hidden lightsaber for ROTJ, so the company did make changes to existing molds / characters, etc.

Heck, they even test modified their Chewbacca mold to make prototypes of Itchy and Mala from The Holiday Special when there was still five minutes' of interest in marketing action figures from the then-newest Star Wars offering from George Lucas. So had they gone into production we'd have gotten three uses of the 1978 Chewbacca mold in just the first year or so.

Must be why the POTF2 line overcompensated with those insanely long lightsabers early on. Accidentally break your saber? Great! Now it's normal-sized.

I think there is now a Tarkin figure that comes with the rereleased Star Wars board game. The old one were you are escaping the Death Star.

And a Kenner-style Snowspeeder Luke in a reprint of the old Hoth board game from 1980 or so. And they just included a Kenner-style Mon Mothma with a new ROTJ six-pack set, and we never got Mon Mothma as an action figure in the '80s.

I have found fans of Jar Jar. They relate to him as a person who suffered being the outsider. The one picked on or abused. The one being made fun of for something outside their control.

In TCW he sort of became a hero for a while. Sure, he'll never live down voting emergency powers to Chancellor Palpatine and thus sending him inexorably down the road to becoming a dictator, but still. He had his moments helping Padmé and others.

I mean, on the one hand, he helped create the Empire. On the other, he deliberately inhaled the fart of a space camel. You pays your money, you makes your choice.

I've always like Jar Jar. I was a kid when The Phantom Menace came out, so I was right in his target audience. And even as an adult I still find him fun.
The fact that he started Palpatine down the path to becoming Emperor is unfortunate.

I was in my late teens/early 20's when the prequels came out; Jar Jar didn't do a thing for me and I wasn't shocked when his role was progressive scaled back in subsequent movies . . . but I loved the Ewoks as a kid, so I understood that I wasn't the primary target audience anymore.
This only thing that's ever turned me off Star Wars is the fandom; particularly all the obsessive prequel hating nonsense that was rampant in the early 00's. The increasingly grim and "edgy" books and comics of that era also helped dampen my interest.
It wasn't until Clone Wars came out that it actually felt like Star Wars again (mostly because of Lucas's involvment, no doubt.) As rough as those first few seasons were at times, I'd take them over "attack of the alien bondage vampires" or "here's a whole book series explaining why space viking-spartans are way better than Jedi" any day. Yes, even the Jar Jar episodes.
