The commandent of Rura Penthe

EJA

Fleet Captain
This Klingon man, whose name is given as Koth in the IDW miniseries Nero, served as the overseer of the prison on Rura Penthe in 2293, as shown in ST VI. Nero shows that he occupied that position as far back as 2233, and I'm just wondering, is it really plausible that Koth could have been in the same place and done the same job for sixty (or more) years? Nero also depicts him as commanding a battlecruiser in the hunt for Nero and his crew, which seems a bit odd to me. Opinions?

Worf shared a name with his grandfather. Klingon have their own way of doing things, still it seem strange for a warden/head guard to command a starship during a hunt.

There are people living now who have had the same job for 50+ years. I don't see how 60 years is all that different, especially if lifespans in the future are longer.

No, it's not really plausible that a Klingon warden would hold the same job at the same prison camp for sixty years, and there is no logical for him to command a battlecruiser. It's all just fanwank.

Of course the Nero comic is all fanwank. As you'll discover when
Nadara's Borg tech full integrates itself into the ship and takes off to the Delta Quadrant on a spiritual quest and finds V'Ger.
That's seriously what happens

What? :wtf:

So glad I didn't bother reading that.

Without having read the comic, I would say it's plausible a Klingon could be at the same position for 60 years. As it is, like RoJoHen said, it's completely possible for humans NOW to be at a position for 50 years. And given we know Klingons have a considerably longer life than humans (150-ish years, IIRC) I don't see 60 years as being a stretch. Hell, I could believe 100 years, to be honest.

Now, him captaining his own ship, or the idea that Rura Penthe would have a warship "on standby" that the Commandant could take out at will does seem a little silly.

Sneaky bastard was also a member of the Vulcan High Council.

He was also the scientist who stole Data's body after making him call him "Grandpa", and the alien who helped the Doctor, Seven and Naomi shake free of an alien clouds influence.

There's a secretary in my company who just celebrated her 70th anniversary with the company, at the tender age of 87.

My 30th anniversary in the same company is next August.

How exactly are the Narada and V'Ger kindred spirits?! How is the Narada alive? Does the comic claim the V'Ger is also the Borg?

For once I'm in complete agreement with Wormy. Comic books are by definition not canon in any way, or even really official. It's just fanwank of ridiculous proportions. Just like the Shatnerverse novels where the machine planet V'Ger came from was supposed to be the Borg homeworld, even though the actions of the machine race are nothing like the actions of the Borg. Or that Peter David novel where it turns out that the Doomsday Machine was created to fight the Borg. This insistence on trying to link separate things together in the Star Trek universe is, quite frankly, silly in the extreme.

In hindsight of a lot of other freaky things Trek writers have put in the shows over the years, I didn't think the episode with V'Ger in the Nero comic was all that insane.

As for Koth commanding one of the battlecruisers sent to recapture the Narada......maybe Klingon High Command thought that Koth was one of the people who knew Nero best, and might be able to out-think him?

In which case he would have just been aboard a ship as a specialist or mission consultant, not actually be in command of the ship.

WHo really understands the Klingon Military structure? Perhaps it was a question of honor. And as the guy who let Nero get away, the only way to restore the honor to his House was to take a ship and track him down.
